Epiphone G-400 Owners:

Re: Epiphone G-400 Owners:

is the "worn" finish similar to a faded Gibson finish?

The Gibson Faded finish has an open grain, usually if not always mahogany. The Epiphone "Worn" finish does not have the grain open like the Gibson finish, it's grain-filled, and kind of a satin finish.

The "Worn Brown" finish on my Dot Studio is very thin, shows a lot of the grain, and has polished to a pleasant gloss in areas of high wear, like where my forearm rests.

The day I bought it (uggggggggg-LY! :laugh2: but it shows off the finish)

You can see the whole album here if you want to see more close-up shots of the Epiphone "Worn" finish.

I've seen Epi's version of their Faded finish and I don't think it compares to Gibson's. Epi's look sorta fake - kinda like that wood panel stuff you'd cover the walls with back in the '70's... Gibson's Faded finish more resemble stained wood with a very thin sealer. You can actually feel the wood grain. The mahogany wood is somewhat soft. This is a lousy pic, but IMO, there is a difference.

Oh snap, good point.

I forgot that the Faded Gibsons had a very open grain.

I will edit my post!

Re: Epiphone G-400 Owners:

Yeah the Epi's don't have that open grain finish, it's a totally different look altogether. Whether you think it's ugly or not is another matter. I personally think they look freakin' great, under certain lights (although I'd prefer a normal glossy finish).

Re: Epiphone G-400 Owners:

For $300 you're not going to get a Gibson-quality finish. But you do get your money's worth with an Epi SG. Put in a pair of American-made PU's and it'll sing.

That's a given, obviously the guitar itself is not going to compare to it's gibson reissue counterpart, but I've played several different epiphone models, and while they arent carbon copies of the gibsons theyre based on, they're good guitars with decent specs. I'm thinking I'll purchase one in black, and put a custom or custom 5 in the bridge. that would be the most urgent mod in my eyes. the neck pickup can wait. I'm going on a small local tour soon, and i don't want to take my gibson V or any of my fenders, ive heard horror stories about entire vans being stolen (with gibsons and american fender basses, among other things). I like the SG, i've grown fond of it. I don't want to take anything I'm too attached too on the road. if I can find a used g-400, i'll take that. if not, screw it, ill just drop 3 bills and get a new one. I realize SGs are fragile, but I think ill be fine. im not the type thats spinning around onstage.

Re: Epiphone G-400 Owners:

I played a white g-400 for a minute or two. the poly finish felt a lil cheap somehow. but it was a nice guitar. it's on the same quality level as epiphone LP stds. They prolly will never sing with 100% of a good Gibson SG's tone, but with some good pickups and a setup, you'll be good to go until you get a "real" SG. Seriously, no one but you will notice the difference... unless they look at the headstock ^_^
I passed the white SG up for a white tele, but that's just because I already had an LP as my 2x bucker guitar. SG's kinda aren't my thing unless they're white. Then they're the sechs.

I kind of dislike white gibson finishes. they can become yellowed, and i just dont like the way it looks, the finish feels thick for some reason on white gibsons.

and i dont think anyone will notice the different between the gibson and the epi unless they know what gibson and epi even ARE. :lmao:

ive read it here on this forum in several different expressions: gear is only important to guitarists, the general public doesnt care if you use a green tortex or an orange one, and they dont notice if youre amp is running on JJs or Sovteks.

Re: Epiphone G-400 Owners:

No problems with any of my white Gibsons turning yellow. I beleive the SG and LP are almost 10 years old...

When I look at that guitar my head is filled with a mix of Zal Cleminson, Glen Buxton, Brenden Harkin and Pete Townshend. That's gotta be good.

I love my G-400. Much guitar for little money.

I've rather enjoyed mine, still do. I did have to do a couple upgrades, namely change the pegs (mine was made before they started using Grover's, had to replace those utterly WORTHLESS Kluson tuners) and replaced the pots and wiring. I still have the stock pickups and they actually get a tone I like a lot. Somehow I'm able to get a nice thick sort in between Bill Connors and Holdsworth-ish tone from it.

Re: Epiphone G-400 Owners:

Absolutely. I buy almost all of my PU's used, on eBay. Just buy from reputable guys that have some experience & positive ratings. I've saved a lot of money that way.

Alternatively, trade with the bros on this forum. (Hello, Mattt!)

I like the Cream 3 pickup G 400 Customs those loke so cool, especially considereing the original costs like an arm and leg.

I know somebody with the US reissue 61 LP/SG Custom. IMO, it is worth an arm and a leg. (And I don't even like SGs very much.)

Well hello! :naughty:

Now, if this one had dot inlays instead of trapeziums...

Re: Epiphone G-400 Owners:

theres something about the way the worn one looks in photos that isnt appealing to me.

dont get me wrong, i like the colour of the guitar

didn't read through the whole thread. the worn finish on the epi SG is waaaaay different from the gibson. with the epi, it almost seems like they stain it, then put a real thick layer or unsanded clear. with the gibson, it's just stained. it's a very different feel.
