Epiphone

Which epiphone guitar do you think has the best quality/sound? (with pickup change of course) I am looking into the les paul replicas mostly.

Re: Epiphone

The only one I liked (and I tried a sh*tload) was the Epi Goth. I played one Standard I thought was pretty good too.

They're good guitars for the money, but you need to try out as many as you can, then pick the one that speaks to you.

Re: Epiphone

The standard and the Goth were the ones that main caught my eye, wanted to see some opinions on another other of the Epi models.

Re: Epiphone

well, i tried the (i think) its the 57 reissue model. whatever the goldtop p90 loaded one was. was pretty nice. decent sound and playability

Re: Epiphone

I tried out a standard LP and i liked it alot. I also really like the custom LPs, them seem really heavy. Also even though they are kind of a rip of, the epiphone elitist series is very good in terms of quality. I really really like the elitist custom LP. If i were to find a happy medium among epiphone guitars i wuld say the regular epiphone custom LP is where its at.

I replaced the pups, wireing, switch, and pots in mine. The tuners are fine in my opinion (I have the Goth, I don't know what the others are like).

Re: Epiphone

The Elite Epiphones are higher quality instruments with one piece mahogany necks and long teck tenons. These are made in Japan. The 'regular' Epiphones sometimes have two piece glued together necks (one part for the headstock, one for the neck) , poorer quality wood and materials and are made in Korea and China.

It depends on your budget. Also check out korean Tokais an alternative to Epiphone.

The elitists are the best. The rest are niether here nor there. Some are alder bodies, others are mahogany, some even have maple caps. All the non elitists I've seen have had maple necks but I've heard of ones with mahogany ones. It comes down to what you find. The elitists are a sure bet though!

The Gothics are mahogany with an alder cap, mahogany neck, and rosewood fretboard.

Oddly enough, they're a studio that costs the same amount as the Standards.....(around here anyway). Maybe that's why they sound all right.

Re: Epiphone

i agree with that idea that with the elitist you at least know what your getting, regular line epiphones tend to have a mix and match of woods good or bad...

Re: Epiphone

My Epi Korina Explorer is a sweet guitar. I would strongly suggest rewiring the whole thing from scratch.

Re: Epiphone

All stereotypes aside, my gf's uncle just got an Epiphone Special II and he must have picked up a really good one because it rang unplugged like an acoustic and sustained like crazy. The pickups were pretty solid too. He picked it up for $160 brand new on sale.

I've played a lot of Epis that were bad, but this one really kicked. The neck was nice and round and chunky/fat. The fretwork was done well and playing was smooth and comfortable.

He usually uses his Gibson "Howard Roberts" fusion archtop when he plays, but he was in the mood for a dual humbucker guitar and picked it up. He's loving the Epi, so it goes to show you that lower end guitars can "have it". That's the way I feel about my G&L Skyhawk; it was relatively inexpensive and is just awesome.

Re: Epiphone

The Epi Ace Frehley is good. Has a maple neck so it has a little bit brighter tone than a mahogany neck LP. More snap when picking. The Frehley has 3 Dimarzio Super Distortions. I put a PAF Pro in the neck for more versatility. The tuners have never failed and mine are pre Grover which they use now. I recently played a white custom and it played so well. Plus the pups arent too bad as they are now USA made. Id still put duncans in it.

Re: Epiphone

Epi LP Custom. It has a Gotoh bridge and tuners which are fine. (no problems with mine) Pot's are crap but the switch hasn't given up the ghost yet.
As for the Gibson designed pickups, 'mediocre' might be best word to describe them. They don't sound bad at all but Duncans shure are a LOT better.

The Elitists should be a lot better according to their website but the Custom has the best bang for the buck ratio...

A PRS Tremonti SE might be a nice alternative if they still sell it in the USA.

Re: Epiphone

Ive played an elitist series epihone lespaul and I thought they were a real nice peice of wood, the wood had a good tone to it unplugged in it and had a nice resonance though the body when strummed. The maple top on it was also really nice. I dont really like the standard epis tho cause the tops on the standards just look like theyre drawn on or theyre fake or laminated or something. Also i like the feel of japanese made guitars.

Re: Epiphone

My Epi Les Paul Classic rocks balls. It has mahogany neck and body with a quilted maple cap, rosewood fretboard, Grover tuners. I upgraded the pickups ('59 neck & JB bridge), all wiring, jacks, switch & pots. I had a bone nut installed and dressed the frets. :smoker:
