ES-335 love..anyone?

Re: ES-335 love..anyone?

I just sold my 78 Ibanez 2630 a couple months ago and regret it every day, but the stock pickups sucked and it was all original. I never should have sold that thing. You know, it actually makes me sad.

Re: ES-335 love..anyone?

I love my Tokai 335 complete with Seths, the versatility is amazing and they look pretty **** sexy....

I currently have GAS for another to try with a set of Phat Cats, on the look out for a dot, waiting for a studio to appear on the bay at the right price.

Re: ES-335 love..anyone?

The 355's are great also. I actually prefer the 335 or 355 over the Stereos. I find the choke on the Stereos don't really do much. The inlays on the 355 are really sweet.

Me too. The Varitone with choke works for my man BB King...but when I play a ES-345 or 355 with the Varitone it sounds like I'm playing guitar through my nose!

Re: ES-335 love..anyone?

There are few guitars tjhat are just the cat's meow- and a good 335 is one of them! I'm always looking at good buys in a sheraton II...basically a fancy 335!

Sosomething...I dig the 137's also!

Re: ES-335 love..anyone?

Howdy,

SoSomething: consider yourself in the club! That's a pretty guitar there. If someone were to tell me: "I've got a semi-hollow Gibson in a blueburst finish.", I'd be inclined to think that it wouldn't look good. Yours looks great!
So many good contributions already. I'd like to add that I'm primarily a bridge P/U guy, but am learning to play leads with just the neck or even with the switch in the middle. With my "The Twin", It's necessary to EQ the amp settings for alot less Bass than with my Teles or Rickenbackers, but the tone is there..sometimes I just need to dial it in. This is the smoothest playing guitar I own. Keep those posts coming, ya'll!

Dammit.

Re: ES-335 love..anyone?

I love a good one and wish I had one. I've owned a few, but the best Gibson electric I ever owned was a '60 or '61 ES-355. Got stolen about 1980. It was my main guitar and after that I never found another Gibson that I bonded with. Lew

Lew,

I know 355's have maple necks and ebony boards...what does that do to the typical 335 tone???

Re: ES-335 love..anyone?

I have a 1967 Gibson ES-335 that needs new frets and a board. It hasn't been played in about five years.

Love the tone and the feel.

Re: ES-335 love..anyone?

I own a 1985 dot RI. The Pickups are stock, and I would never consider chaning them. They are awesome. The pickups in mine are the PAF RI that Gibson was using during this period. Its my favorite HB guitar.

I play through a varitey of amps. I own 1 67 Deluxe Reverb, a 1968 Super Reverb, a Marshall 900 50W combo (I use this with my band mostly) a Bogner Shiva and a Komet 60. I espicially like the tones through the Komet and the Bogner. The Komet has a little more character than the Bogner, but the Bogner gives beautiful cleans as well as some serious grind to it. The Komet just does what it does a lot better than anything else. Since I have the Bogner and the Komet, I really don't use the Fenders as much, but for certain things the Fenders are the right amps. The 335 has always been on my have to have list. I have always felt that guitar players need 4 electric guitars. A Les Paul, a 335, a Strat, and a Tele. Those 4 guitars define Blues and Rock.

I'm going to bet that your 335 has the same pups as mine, the infamous Shawbuckers. They are great pups. If you REALLY want to open up the tone though, mine were dark, replace the stock 300Ks with 500Ks. WOW it really brought mine to life.

Here's mine, a 1984 Dot Reissue. Not the most flattering pic, but all right.

I did put a Tonepros aluminum TP on it, and eventually I'll get a tonepros bridge too.

This guitar sounds KILLER through my Marshall 2204 that Jeff Seal rebuilt. In fact I think he used this guitar to tune it when he was out here in July. Thing is this guitar sounds really good through everything. I can get some great Cream tones using it and my Dr. Z Rt. 66.

You continue to amaze me, Aceman. Thought 335's were too traditional for you. The 335's I'd recommend:

-Black Epi Sheraton (actually a 355) - gold hardware - pure class with that LP Custom look. The blond natural Sheratons are very nice too.

-Red flame-maple Epi Dot Deluxe - gold hardware - these are incredible.

-Amber flame-maple Hamer Echotone - gold hardware - long out of production, there's still a few around for sale.

I've seen a lot of 335's, and to me these are the best-looking of the bunch. Put in a set of American or European PU's, and you'll be hooked. Of course, you'll still love your LP's (as I do).

Now... one more thing. I hope you're an SG fan too. If the answer is "yes" we'll be friends for life.

Re: ES-335 love..anyone?

I love the 2007 ES-335 I got in August. It's instantly risen to one of my lifetime favorites.
It'll be a main player along with a LP and strat for life.

Re: ES-335 love..anyone?

I've had a love affair with the Gibson ES Series from the very beginning. Around 1973, I traded off a Telecaster for a Gibson ES-150 DCN. These are about 2.5" thick at the rim, totally hollow; with a Master Volume on the upper treble bout--but they look like a 335. Mine was a very beautiful guitar in natural blonde maple, but I had a real love-hate relationship with it. It did not intonate well, and would not hold it's tuning. Sounded good through Fender Twins, Super Reverb and Dual Showman Reverbs--and sucked through anything else. (Unfortunately, I had a SUNN. LOL!) I kept it for 6 years of frustration and turmoil, and finally sold it at a loss. I was glad to be rid of it, and don't want it back.

Shortly after I bought the ES-150, I found a great deal on a long-neck Gibson ES-330 TD. These are also totally hollow. The long neck version is the same 24.75" scale as any other 330 or Epi Casino, but the neck attaches at the same point as the 335 model. (Long neck, not long scale.) Beautiful caramel burst with a walnut back, this guitar just rocked with it's P-90 pickups. Probably one of the best guitars I ever owned, period. And in a fit of desperation and stupidity, I sold it--for a $#&%$#& DRUM MACHINE!! Probably the worst deal of all time in all of guitardom! But, I got to admit, I paid the rent with that drum machine for many years, so I guess it was worth it. Oh, those guitars sell for about $5K now. (And I'd be LUCKY to get 25 bucks for the drum machine!)

Currently, I have a Japanese Hondo 935 from the late 1970s that I bought about 1995. It is a very good set-neck copy of a Gibson with a teriffic neck, great sounding PAFs and pro-quality hardware all-around. This was a great pawnshop find for me, as these were expensive guitars back then. It has a kind of Cinnamon Sunburst, very pretty. Sweet guitar.

I also have an Ibanez Artstar AS-120. It's Korean-made, with the Super 58 pickups (I LIKE 'EM!), and better build quality than Gibson ever dreamed of. Cherry Red and ready to rock. Plays like buttah! Sounds like a hot pecan waffle with pure maple syrup! Sweet! (And now I'm hungry again!)

And then last summer I picked up a used 2006 ES-335 in the Antique Sunburst. Oh my! A wonderful sounding guitar--so perfect for the things I do with my band. My bass player LOVES this guitar--his favorite of my 45 guitar collection. The neck is a little weird, with a bit of a shoulder on the bass side--but no matter--this one is a keeper. Nope, not as well made as the Artstar--but definitely THE REAL DEAL.

Oh yeah, lotsa love for the 335 family.

Re: ES-335 love..anyone?

Love 'em.

Can't afford a real 335 (would prefer a 345 in red -It's a Freddie King thing), but I'd love to get one down the road. If I had to choose only one Gibson it'd definitely be a 335.

The nicest '335' I've played recently was a Heritage 535. That was a pants-wettingly good guitar.

Right now, I use a De Armond Starfire 4, which is a great guitar, a little brighter in tone than most 335s. I'd love to get a 90s-era Guild Starfire. I'm also partial to the Yamaha troy Van Leewen model (think 'biggest strat you ever heard') , but the retail on those is pretty steep. I hope he gets a better royalty rate than Ed Van Halen, because those guitars are obviously made on the same production line as models Yamaha charge 1/3 of the price for...

Re: ES-335 love..anyone?

The arsenal just wouldn't be complete without one. This is my third one and someday I will sell it, but not today. 1985, all original with stock Burst Bucker Pro pickups.... the Bigsby was an add on. If you need one of the custom logo plates, let me know. I have about 20 reproductions that are exact in size and 70's font.

I've never been inside mine. No need to. It sounds awesome they way it is and I ain't gonna mess with it. I hear what you are saying though. I have a LP Studio and that had 300K pots in it too. I changed those to 500K and it opened up bigtime.

This is my baby . . . although she has a new bridge (gold) and switch tip (cream) now.

Re: ES-335 love..anyone?

Howdy,

Bludave and Guitarstv: Those are gorgeous! The red one looking more "upscale", while the Ebony Gibson has an understated, businesslike appearance. I've been having fun getting that fat signature tone lately. Anyone else?

I just re-wired a Jay Turser 335 (red and chrome with white plastic parts & gold knobs; very retro-looking. I feel like I should be wearing a sweater & saddle shoes when I play it).

I put an Dimarzio Al Dimeola in the bridge with a push-pull to keep the slug coil on in coil cut mode (warmer & louder than the screw coil by itself). The volume & tone pots are both 250K, with a .100 cap on the tone. The Dimeola is around 10,000 ohms (medium output) and I put an A3 in it for warmth.

The neck is a Phat CatB with 500K's & a .022 cap.

This is a very sweet sounding guitar. I love the open & warm sound of the Phat Cat. And paired with a bridge HB, it's very versatile. The P-90 neck/bridge HB pair should be standard on a lot of models. Works very well.

There are three sounds that I really like to hear from guitars . . . a shimmery single coil neck pickup, an overdriven bridge humbucker, and a thick neck humbucker. The 335 at neck position with vol/tone full up is probably my favorite lead sound.
