ES-335 love..anyone?

Re: ES-335 love..anyone?

I've done it about 50 times on semi & hollowbodies, so to me that's the "norm" & solid bodies are almost too easy. But a back cover plate would be nice, and should have almost no impact on the tone. Lucille's have a rear panel, but there is so much stuff jammed in there with the huge vari-tone, it's worse than squeezing things thru an F hole. Also, there is a lot of variety in where the 4 pot holes are drilled in relation to the F hole.

For me, the only pot I have to pull through the guitar with a wire (stiff, plastic-coated) is the neck tone pot. The other three I can do with a pair of 6" long forecepts with a curved end. I can do all four in a few minutes. I've done the Jimmy Page system to a bunch of 335's, and even the push-pulls go in fairly easy. But I'd still prefer a rear panel cover.

You are a big pimp!

It took me FOREVER to do mine. My knobs don't look exactly straight so I'm going to work on it again this weekend.

Added 335 bonus -they are great for hiding the pot belly. That way you can work the ladies into a lather onstage, and then appear to be EVEN SEXIER after the gig.Try that with a flying V.

Maybe that's why us old guys like them.

Re: ES-335 love..anyone?

lol, i don't know if you would even consider my barclay a 335, but it's close. all the same features, minus the center block.

however this one does have a bucker in the bridge

but it's got a funky dearmond in the neck...that i love!!! it was made late 60s, early 70s. it's so beat up, but i love it.

cost: $75

Re: ES-335 love..anyone?

Preach it, brutha. And +1 to that horrific semi design I saw above - a semi-hollow LP is wrong, wrong, WRONG!!!!!!

(IMHO, of course :) )

Why wrong?? Single-cutaway florentine hollowbodies have been around a lot longer than the double-cut 335 shape!

And that's MY GUITAR yer talkin' about!

I agree! A black single (sharp) cutaway hollowbody with gold hardware & a trapeze tailpiece, is a thing of beauty. It is oh so right.

Howdy,

BTW, what color is your ES-335? Mine is a dark Tobacco Sunburst; it's lovely, but has very little flame and only one or two birdseyes.

PS: She's got the small block inlays, which I like.

Re: ES-335 love..anyone?

Howdy,

My favorite local "mom & pop" guitar shop here in Shreveport may well become a Gibson dealer again! They'll hopefully be carrying ES-335s by late Summer. I can't wait to see a Cherry red ES-335. Now if I can just save a good $2800.

I had an Austin copy, and this one was actually very nice. Had Gibson Burstbuckers, a 1 in the neck, 2 in the bridge. Sounded great through anything, really, which included Fenders and Hiwatts. It also sounded much better than anything else through my Micro Cube.

Here's my 335 with a set of Phat Cats in it.

Re: ES-335 love..anyone?

Howdy,

Stratsky: Don't go away now! Please share with us how she sounds with those Phat Cats. My favorite P/Us are P-90s, and we all know that Phat Cats were designed to sound like 'em. Please respond.
BTW, that Cherry red finish is so pretty; classic. How does she play?

PS: The last time I saw a Rosewood fingerboard that pretty was on a Rickenbacker 330 some 16 years ago!

Thanks Eggman. The Phat Cats sound really good in it especially the bridge p'up. It really growls when overdriven. It has a sweeter sound than other P90 guitars I've heard. To me a 335 has to be red. It has an exceptional neck on it and plays very well.

Re: ES-335 love..anyone?

I lost my '63 to the taxman, but I picked up a very good 80's Dot and it works pretty well for me...put some old T-tops with M55 magnets in it and it sings.

This was given to me by my father for Christmas '91. Around '95 or so the pickups were replaced by a '59 neck and JB bridge. The strap button was moved to the upper bout to keep the guitar from trying to go face down.

It has been my main guitar ever since I got it. I like the way the neck feels with my left hand: a little wider than a strat, not super thin. I use 11-50 strings, tune to standard pitch and the frets have held up nicely. There's a good variety of sounds to be had just by switching pickups and rolling the tones. Solos with the '59 in the neck are nice and round and sustainy. I find that I end up using the JB bridge pickup for strumming, can be bright and chimey in a nice way. I love using both pickups together with the bridge tone rolled down about half...gets a good "Sunshine of Your Love" tone. When I'm in a high volume situation, I can actually feel the air pushing out of the f-holes, it's a trip. The 16" body is addicting, when I play smaller guitars they make me feel naked.

The JB came with a gold cover, but the store I bought the '59 at only had uncovered versions. I took the cover from the original Epi pickup, mounted it on the '59. Seems to work fine. Both pickups had been wax potted during a cleaning session and the sustained note/feedback sounds that can be obtained are more controllable and intentional sounding...like a big dog on a leash waiting for its master to say "Sic 'em!"

I have an inexpensive Ibanez; but am considering a more upscale 335 style guitar. How do you all think the Epiphone Elitist compares to a real deal Gibson 335?
