Expression vs Volume vs Wah pedals

so I am sure there are technical differences between them
a Wah is a foot controlled Tone
and Volume is.... well a foot controlled volume

can you substitute a volume or a wah for an expression

how technically different are they?

With some EFX you use a volume peddle for the expression peddle. By doing this you are essentially replacing one of the parameter controls with the volume peddle, allowing you to adjust that parameter on the fly with your foot.

I was looking at a chorus pedal
and it had an expression pedal input

I got to thinking

just what kinda circuit was an "expression"

It depends on the chorus pedal and what it's expecting to see at that expression pedal input. Maybe it's a continuously variable resistance, a voltage that varies from, say, 0-10V DC, or something else.

You cant use a wah for expression pedal, the pot value for exp pedal will be somewhere around 25k i think. I'm not sure but Boss or Ernie Ball make a exp pedal that can be used as a volume pedal, something to do with polarity switch..

An expression pedal actually does nothing on its own. It has a pot in it wired up to the input and output. It accepts the signal from the effects unit, and acts just like a knob on an effects pedal. Some expression pedals you can program what it does to a certain effect, others dont. But you have to have an effects pedal that supports the expression pedal.
