As a kid in the '80s that was the first song I heard from him and I remember I rewound the tape at least a hundred times or more when I heard the solo. Then came the other Eruptive stuff for me but that song is still my fav.

WhoTF is Michael Romeo? I only know Michael Angelo.
That said: IMO Shred = thinnest possible tone acheivable = Nothing I could like, regardless of how stoned I am.
I know that there are a few that differ from the lump of mud in the middle, but for me most of it is just soulless "Fretboard Masturbation", with a few notable exceptions like Satch. Sorry

tom morello has the bes tone ever!!
and hes almost shreadworthy with some of the new stuff!
hes the only guitarest that i cant fuiger out what the hell hes doing to get his sounds!
i voted vai (for bad horsie!), but should have voted petrucci
-as i am- dream theater
evh dosnet apeal to me (dont hurt me!!) and i feel his tone is hollow and a bit mixed down in far too many of his songs!
where the hell is satch!

its ok!
shred IS ****! though if you can do it, its fun, and helps you with the grounding you need to make all other decent music

Id have to say petrucci, in that out of those guys his tone is the one i would pick if i could choose one.
But overall my favourite tone from a fast player would be steve morse!

No need to apologize, you're exactly right! Even "Eruption" doesn't strike me as brilliant tone-wise. Granted, EVH is a super talent who can play like a machine, but the tone is too cold and the feeling isn't there. That's just my .02.
Incidentally, the greatest combination of "musician" and "virtuoso" that I can think of is Jeff Beck. He's got amazing tone, as well. None of the guys listed in your poll would even be there if it weren't for Beck. Also, despite their amazing list of accomplishments and musical achievements, none of them have done HALF the things Jeff has. He's tackled blues, jazz, electronica, rock... you name it... what's strange is that he's awesome at everything he touches. Jack of all trades, master of all of them.
And, yes, I would consider him a shredder. He's not the first name that pops in your head when you think of the genre, but that's only because he's too diverse to be mired in one genre. He can wail with the best of them, though.

LOL, EVH is actually one of the few that I like, at least his older stuff. For me theres a certain "He´s gonna lose it any second now" Vibe to his and Satch´s playing that really sets them apart from some of the others somehow

I can't believe I'm the only one who has voted for Yngwie so far!
In terms of favorite player/material on that list I'd say Petrucci hands down.
But in terms of tone, no matter how annoying you may think the big Swede may be, he's a tone monster!
Eddie's a very close second but Vai, Satch, Petrucci (to a lesser extent) all have very processed, electronic tones IMO.

Ah yea very very true! After seeing vai live i was blown away by his tone and so i suppose i see his tone as better than JP's. But yea they are both processed tone. Didnt mean to say JP's tone is processed and Vai's isnt. My bad! :smack:bryvincent said:
