Re: Fav. Shred tone - Poll

It took me a while to check out this thread 'cause in my book, "favorite shred tone" is kinda like "most comfortable tatoo": something you suffer through to get to the cool stuff. In general, I find many shredders' tone to be
  • Buzzy
  • Thin
  • Over-processed
In my book, (early) EVH had a brilliant rhythm guitar tone and a good lead tone. Malmsteen's lead tone is pretty good though I dislike his rhythm tone. Petrucci's tone is listenable but it goes downhill pretty quickly after him.

All IMO, of course. :)

Re: Fav. Shred tone - Poll

Yngwie has great tone..

Does anyone else think sometimes Michael Romeo's neck tone is an emulation of yngwie's?

I really dont like Vai's tone on records.. but i saw him live last year and his tone was scorching.

JP has cool tone, its not stick pin thin like others

EVH, is EVH... nuff said!

Jeff Beck has better tone than all of them though..

imo of course

If your trying to say you call petrucci's tone 'processed and thin'.
Then i'll gladly accept to be processed and thin in your books.

Cause I reckon petrucci has the best tone out of anyone.

Satch and other shredders didnt make it cause I knew ppl would vote for them. I dont care for finding out things I already know.

Re: Fav. Shred tone - Poll

eh?

so you rigged it so people wouldnt vote for who you wouldnt want to win?

i like satch's neck bucker tone a load but his bridge tone isnt that nice..

Re: Fav. Shred tone - Poll

Yes, that is true. I'm talking about Altitudes, how lathered in gain and sustain his tone is...dear lord, more gain than I use, and he SHREDs! Who knows what gear he used?

Re: Fav. Shred tone - Poll

I voted Petrucci because he's got the heavier tone for rhythm, but when the lead kicks in - it's sweet, warm, thick, and buttery. VH was a close contender, and I love his raw tone, but Petrucci earned it.

i was trying to find that out yesterday, all the pics of him with guitars were too far away for me to see the headstocks..

Re: Fav. Shred tone - Poll

I had to vote for Eddie simply because he's the only one on the list that I've heard.
(Except for a little Vai - a long time ago.)

Re: Fav. Shred tone - Poll

i dont knwo why so many people think shred tone is thin and buzzy sounding ?

maybe yngwie but he's an idiot :D

but out of those i guess it'd have to be petrucci

one thing is, with jeff beck. i really cant stand his tone, when i saw him live it was just so cutting it was annoying, talk about thin.

i really dont know though, but i love paul gilberts tone though.

tom morello has the bes tone ever!!
and hes almost shreadworthy with some of the new stuff!
hes the only guitarest that i cant fuiger out what the hell hes doing to get his sounds!

Not just the newer stuff, listen to Rage Against the Machine (Self Titled). He's got various bits of shredding thrown in there, but most of it is pretty tasteful, so it hardly seems like shredding at all.

Not "processed and thin" but IMO it's "processed and buzzy". I'm a big fan of DT but I'm oftentimes not too keen on JP's tone.

YMMV and in this case it does. :)

Thin? Because it lacks the mids of EVH's early tone.

Buzzy? Because there's so much preamp gain/compression and is often scooped (compared to, say, EVH's early tone) that what starts as "crunch" becomes more shrill.

All IMO of course. :)
