Favorite Hair Metal Pickup?!

Whats up guys Im looking at tricking out my super strat 80's style and I need a good metal pickup... think Dokken, Whitesnake, Motley Crue, Van Halen (Paf I know).. etc

Pretty tight... harmonically rich!

Sound clips or youtube vids of artists using that pickup would be awesome as well!

Oh and my guitar is mahogany with a rosewood neck.

Re: Favorite Hair Metal Pickup?!

Wouldnt the screamin demon be a bit too warm for a mahogany strat? George's guitar is all maple which would be pretty bright, yet hes got a pretty mellow tone which leads me to believe the Demon is a warm pup.

Re: Favorite Hair Metal Pickup?!

I was thinking about possibly throwing a Jazz in the bridge position... you guys think it could do hair metal? With a boost probably..

Re: Favorite Hair Metal Pickup?!

I would throw in a JB in the guitar and call it good myself, but I know the Distortion is practically the same pickup but with a ceramic mag in it, and has less high-mid honk to it. But, what kind of amp are you playing through? I would think the best amp for hair metal would be something Marshall-y...

Re: Favorite Hair Metal Pickup?!

Custom 8!! Jb would be second choice. It was THE pup of the 80s..

My Kramer Focus 6000 has that amazing woody 80s tone... It does more than 80s too.

I wouldn't call the Demon a warm pickup at all. It is bright and clean.

well,

Dokken - Distortion
Whitesnake - (im guessing you want John Sykes era) Dirty Fingers
Motley Crue - Super Distortion (early years), '59 (later years)
Van Halen - '78 (early DLR yrs), Custom Custom (later DLR yrs)

Good list, partly right, but omits amp (I realize the op was only asking about pickups) an important part of the chain. For ex, on the Whitsnake album it was those Mesas more than anything else, etc.

I would vote for the JB or Demon.

Re: Favorite Hair Metal Pickup?!

Jb or d.distortion. Never ever ever the duncan custom anymore for me. Happy I sold it! i do think that the JB would win. I just installed it in a guitar which sounded as if its potential had to be unleashed, and finally I hear how this guitar 'wants' to sound. JB hands down.

I had the screamin demon too, and its brighter than the duncan custom, but not as bright and growly as the JB.

Re: Favorite Hair Metal Pickup?!

DO NOT forget the MOST important part to getting that "big hair" metal sound.....

a Hotrodded MARSHALL! (usually a JCM 800 being pushed by a tube screamer or DS-1 distortion.)

Re: Favorite Hair Metal Pickup?!

Not that I was ever a "Hair-Metalist", I was way more into Fusion. I did have my favorites though. My pereferences are either SH-4 or SH-5.
