Favorite Hair Metal Pickup?!

Re: Favorite Hair Metal Pickup?!

Gibson Style Guitar: Distortion or (get this....Alt 8)
Fender Stye Guitar: JB or Demon

Re: Favorite Hair Metal Pickup?!

if the guitar has a trem: JB without a doubt, 78 would also be a good choice

Re: Favorite Hair Metal Pickup?!

For mahogany? I'd try a Duncan Distortion...........Great in a mahogany with a maple cap anyway....In my opinion.

Re: Favorite Hair Metal Pickup?!

This is a delicate subject for me - I'd choose the appropriate pup for various bands. But..."Hair Metal" overall?

The DD, while a great choice is a little too serious, IMO. Best for the heavier metal of the day.

The JB, while a definite shred-tastic choice, is a little to "lead" oriented IMO.

I have to fully concur on the Custom as being the best all around Big Hair pup. All the highs, all the bottom, all the harmonics, none of the harshness....Definitely Custom.

Re: Favorite Hair Metal Pickup?!

Wouldnt the screamin demon be a bit too warm for a mahogany strat? George's guitar is all maple which would be pretty bright, yet hes got a pretty mellow tone which leads me to believe the Demon is a warm pup.

It's not really a warm pickup. It's fairly bright and articulate.

Re: Favorite Hair Metal Pickup?!

Just wanted to let everyone know I'll be playing through a JCM800.. and a 4x12.. I've got g12h30's and Greenbacks in an X pattern in the cab.

I'm thinking about replacing the celestions with EVM12ls.

--------------------------

So basically the consensus seems to be:

- JB
- Custom
- Distortion
- Screamin Demon

Naturally I lean toward the Demon because its low output and I love low output pickups.

I boost my amp with a Boss SD-1 and sometimes a 6 band EQ set to a frown shape.

Re: Favorite Hair Metal Pickup?!

I was thinking about possibly throwing a Jazz in the bridge position... you guys think it could do hair metal? With a boost probably..

I've got a 57 strat clone that has OC Duffs in the neck and middle and a Jazz in the bridge. With a boost it is a force to be reckoned with, especially in the arena of 80s tones. For rhythm I back off the volume to about 7 and crank it for lead so it doesn't oversaturate. My amp is a Seal modded 2204 with heavy mag G1265s light and heavy cones.

Re: Favorite Hair Metal Pickup?!

JB with the volume rolled back a bit, Distortion, even a 59 will get you there. Custom works with a Jazz neck. Not a fan of the Demon.

Re: Favorite Hair Metal Pickup?!

IMO, it depends heaviliy on the guitar. If it's an alder body Floyd equipped guitar, most Kramers, Jacksons and Charvels used by artists came with JB's, so that will help you nail most tones.

The BC Rich Gunslinger came with a mahogany body and some variant of the Dimarzio Superdistortion

Kramer Nighswans with mahogany bodies used a Full Shred in the bridge and JB middle

Kramer pro axe with mahogany bodies had SD Parallel Axis Distortions in the bridge

Re: Favorite Hair Metal Pickup?!

I would just get the JB or Distortion and call it a day... something with that strong mid presence... I can get Hair Metal tones with almost any pickup and a distortion box lol.
