Favorite Vintage Fender Amp?

Re: Favorite Vintage Fender Amp?

I have always been partial to Silverface Twins and Quads.

Re: Favorite Vintage Fender Amp?

I used to have a Pre-CBS Twin years ago. Really nice cleans and loud as hell. My favorite was my friend's Pre-CBS Vibrolux. That amp kicked ass big time. Excellent tone.

Re: Favorite Vintage Fender Amp?

I played a brown 62 Pro over the weekend. It was nice, but I'm not a fan of 15's. Makes me want to try a Brown Deluxe though.

Re: Favorite Vintage Fender Amp?

I dig the Bandmaster. Mine is a blonde blackface AA763 from the '64-'65 transition period, serial number makes it out to be a '64. The OT was replaced at some point with a Stancor A-3801, which I understand is a bit beefier than the stock unit. Otherwise it's original and sounds great. It's my main studio amp, it gets lots of live use too but has had an Orange nipping at its heels there lately.

Oddly enough the smaller transformer might be what I like about the Vibrolux. It seems a little loose in the caboose - in a good way.

I replaced the OT in my Princeton with a bigger one and I actually slightly liked the original better. Still have not gotten around to swapping it back.

Re: Favorite Vintage Fender Amp?

In that era my favorite would have to be a Blackfaced Deluxe with a Blackface Super a close second.

Re: Favorite Vintage Fender Amp?

Not to hijack the thread but...really? What speakers are you using with it? Is it modded?

I have one that is a 67 or 68. It's a very clean sounding amp for sure; I find it a little cold. But to each his own!

A 67, pure stock, no mods, with two cabs...each with two JBL D120s. Very clean, but I never heard it as "cold" AT ALL. Even with the JBLs. It was full and warm.

Re: Favorite Vintage Fender Amp?

i have a 65 super reverb that sounds killer. I bought it after christmas and i just love playing through that thing. The clean tone on it is great and cranked up it rocks. Its very versatile like most fender amps, takes pedals well and sounds good with buckers and single coils. Its loud and heavy but i don't think ill ever get rid of it. it just sounds too good. I may snag a princeton or deluxe one of these days but i guess ill make do with the super for now : )

Re: Favorite Vintage Fender Amp?

My first real amp, my first piece of vintage gear, the amp that made me realize I'd be doing this for the rest of my life:

Early 1969 Fender Bassman... Blackface specs except for a few pots that date to 69. A blessing and a curse. Could never stay in a two-guitarist band for long because my tone was always bigger than the other guy's self-confidence.
