Favorite Vintage Guitar Amp you've owned

Re: Favorite Vintage Guitar Amp you've owned

A 50 watt Selmer, 2 channel, cream & red, 9 maybe 12 inch speaker, never should have sold this baby. believe they come from u.k.

Re: Favorite Vintage Guitar Amp you've owned

Owned a Traynor YBA3 Custom Special tube head back in the later 70's. just a wicked loud killer clean amp that was a fantastic pedal platform. Would crunch but only at volumes that were LETHAL with big tube power but what a killer rich fat clean that was to die for! Those old Traynor amps are really cool!
One of THESE!!

Another approach for making a Traynor angrier, is getting tube that break up earlier -by selecting a tube rated for earlier breakup.

I have a 72 Fender Quad Reverb I have had since I was 16 I will never part with. I just restored it so its gigging days are over. The amp just sounds amazing.

Re: Favorite Vintage Guitar Amp you've owned

The closest thing I have to a vintage amp is my '88 Marshall Jubilee 2555. I was about seven and a half on the inspection date (04/07/88), and I didn't actually start playing for about another decade. I've owned it since June 2001, bought for the low price of $550.

A friend of mine used to have one of those old Traynors; I think it started its life as a YBA-1. After he was done with it the channels were cascaded and it had a PPIV master volume. That thing sounded like the evil bastard child of a JCM800 and an Orange Overdrive.

Ha -well said -The Traynors were so adept to modify the tonality closer to one of the Bassman based American or British designs.

The Marshall Jubilee is a great amp, and like the 2210 and 900 -everybody hated on them when they came out -for usually for no good reason if they actually even ever tried one and weren't just repeating something (I was guilty of that) -guess it was a fad thing after everyone was tired of hating on Silverfaces and Acoustics.

I think the collective consciousness of the Guitar world needs an en vogue amp to hate on to keep balance in the world.

Not sure what everyone's favorite amp to hate on now is .... so many to choose!

Re: Favorite Vintage Guitar Amp you've owned

Probably my favorite of all my amps is my 76 musicman hd130... It's voiced much like a twin on steroids, ridiculous head room (yeah, that's 130 watts) beautiful cleans and it loves pedals..I use a black star ht dual for crunch and distortion, and really see the benefits of a hybrid pedal with a hybrid amp. Together, they cover everything from 50s rock, country to classic rock.

I think this was probably Leo's best amp design because he wanted to out do Fender. It's a true hybrid with ss and 12ax7 on the preamp side and 6CA7s on the power side and the combination is clear and clean and warm in 1 package...

Great verb, tremelo, 1 basic channel with a full blown 2nd channel with master vol.

At home I run it on low power and get pretty much the same sound I get with full power on stage.

And I am in love with the 4*10 sound... yeah it's a heavy amp to move, but it's worth the energy and effort because the speakers add to the tight, fast attack and still provide plenty if bass.

Here's a photo of a recovered 4"10 that is very much like mine.musicman-410-combo-006.jpg

Re: Favorite Vintage Guitar Amp you've owned

Music Man made some great amps!

Bill
Yeah, I was blown away by the tone and MMs were way under valued when I found this one 5 or so years back...

Total steal at $400. Wish I had gone ahead and grabbed a head while they were under valued.

Re: Favorite Vintage Guitar Amp you've owned

ec used music man amps for a while. solidstate preamp with tube power section. some early models had a 12ax7 phase inverter, later ones had an solidstate. big, clean and loud. good stuff if thats what you are going after

Yeah I have the 12ax7 and have compared to the later ones and felt that the inverter added some warmth and tightness, but it's more likely that I am biased and I was comparing my 4x10 speakers with the 2x12.

Re: Favorite Vintage Guitar Amp you've owned

It's a toss up between a '57 tweed Pro, a '58 high power Twin, or a Biacrown Hiwatt Bulldog combo that I had. They were all a little different, but each sounded fantastic in its own way.
