Feeling argumentative? WARNING TONEWOOD CONTENT

Re: Feeling argumentative? WARNING TONEWOOD CONTENT

I think blind tests are good. Those test show that not all of us have that great hearing when it comes to some specific aspects of tone. I don't have that great hearing that I can distinguish what woods the guitar is made of.

I'd like to know what materials the rest of the guitar was made of like neck, bracing, front plate and so on. I'd also like to know who these guitarists were? Were they pros or regular joes?

Re: Feeling argumentative? WARNING TONEWOOD CONTENT

Science Daily?

Nope...never heard of it. Not exactly Nature or even Scientific American is it?

Re: Feeling argumentative? WARNING TONEWOOD CONTENT

Oh man. Love the title of the thread!!! LOL!!!

Dunno who these dudes are or where they come from but when it comes to electric guitars: I'll put money on the fact that I can hear the difference between Basswood or Alder with Maple and anything else (given the same pickups and amp. settings) (Invaders and Marshalls of course).

To be fair (but I could be WAY off of the mark here): I think it would be HARDER to tell the difference between woods when it comes to ACOUSTIC guitars??? Dunno. Maybe if you're a classical guitarist and purist???

Re: Feeling argumentative? WARNING TONEWOOD CONTENT

Sigh... science daily or not, the actual article from Lancaster university is clearly linked.

Re: Feeling argumentative? WARNING TONEWOOD CONTENT

I read that earlier and I always thought it was the soundboard and bracing that had the largest impact on an acoustic?

Re: Feeling argumentative? WARNING TONEWOOD CONTENT

The article is about acoustic guitars, dumbass. We are talkin' electrics here. The pickups rule.
I see you're on a roll again this morning!!! LOL!!! How're you doing???

Yeh. That's what I would figure anyway. In the article it's just the bottom (back) and sideplates that are made from the different woods. With electric it's like the entire body just about so it follows to me it would make that much more of a difference with electric.

Re: Feeling argumentative? WARNING TONEWOOD CONTENT

There are so many variables in sound that it is pointless to get worked up over it. Either the guitar sounds good to your ears or it doesn’t. I would rather concern myself with creating music than debating it.

Re: Feeling argumentative? WARNING TONEWOOD CONTENT

Well... It's like the difference between Heston Blumenthal and Jamie Oliver not???. Both arrive at the same place but via a different route.

Re: Feeling argumentative? WARNING TONEWOOD CONTENT

Did you hear about the lady having an abortion and running for political office on her way to the Tonewood discussion? :lmao:

Re: Feeling argumentative? WARNING TONEWOOD CONTENT

For purchasing NEW guitars from manufacturers (not small luthiers) the money you spend for a better "sounding guitar" tops out at around 1500.00 -maybe 2k for Archtops etc -after that the increase costs are adding features or "appointments" unrelated to the tone of the instrument but the comfort and functionality, after about 2500.00 or 3k you are usually only paying for presentation features which enhance the "look" of the guitar -things like exotic wood in places that don't matter much, incredible inlays, unusually appointments etc

-now everything affects tone -but about 1500.00 is where the tone is no longer getting appreciable "better" -slightly different maybe but not better.

You trying to tell me that some Jacksons are overpriced??? LOL!!!

Agree 100%. I mean, if you want to have a philosophical discussion about it fine, but people get so worked up over it. To quote the legendary Frank Zappa, "Shut up and play yer guitar!"

Re: Feeling argumentative? WARNING TONEWOOD CONTENT

So, they swapped out the back panel of a bunch of acoustic guitars and nobody could tell the difference?

Doesn't seem too surprising. I'd wager that if any wood makes a difference to the sound of an acoustic it's the top, and to a lesser degree the neck. I'd also bet that the shape and construction of an acoustic matters as much (or more) than the woods used.

Re: Feeling argumentative? WARNING TONEWOOD CONTENT

When I sold my am std strat to pay rent in hard times and spent almost a year getting by on a bullet strat I learned that the price of the guitar doesn't have much bearing if any on what notes you play and how well they get your feelings across... So I agree there comes a point where you just gotta throw all the tone debate stuff out the window
It's fun for academic purposes to debate tone and the factors involved but with how much people talk past each other it gets old sometimes.

Nobody wants to believe this, but trust me a great guitar player still sounds like a great guitar player through a Yamaha Pacifica into a Peavey Bandit.

Ever hear the story about Nuno playing through Eddies rig....
He basically said that he still didn’t sound like Eddie...he still sounded like himself, only playing through eddies gear.

Re: Feeling argumentative? WARNING TONEWOOD CONTENT

All I'm saying is that EVH got easily one of the most coveted tones ever from a piece of knotty, b-stock alder...

Re: Feeling argumentative? WARNING TONEWOOD CONTENT

A lot of guys could do the tonewood bird box challenge and tell the difference between woods but Im be willing to bet most couldn't tell what wood it actually is, including myself... Its a small link in a big chain but it is a factor.

While I'm not a big fan of EVH but I am impressed with his tone from his guitar and just 1 humbucker, sure borderline one dimensional but his dynamics made it interesting.
