Feeling argumentative? WARNING TONEWOOD CONTENT

^^im pretty sure I couldn’t identify what particular wood something was made from.

Yep no shame in it that, its just being real...
Id imagine that if only the bodies were swapped out and everything else was the same, then we certainly could take very educated guesses but that's all we'd be doing.

Absolutely.
I can tell when I’m hearing a Strat vs a LP but I couldn’t identify the difference between an ash Strat or alder.

Re: Feeling argumentative? WARNING TONEWOOD CONTENT

I've done some fairly extensive testing and learned that all my guitars sound better when someone else plays them.

On youtube Anderton's Music from the UK did a blindfold test where they had a varying range of current Fender Strats from Squiers on up and it was interesting to watch that, because they were way off on some of them but spot on with others, notably the pickups gave them away, cause you can just tell cheap pickups sometimes cause theres not much you can do to hide that stuff. lol Also some of them had a very specific neck profile so Id imagine that's true too cause we all can pretty much feel the difference in a neck and what goes to what. Most times.

I noticed the same thing!

Seriously though, it always surprises me how much different I will adjust my gain and eq when someone else is playing.
I can have it all "perfect" and then they hand me the guitar back and I don't like it at all. lol
There's just so much more to guitar tone than EQ.

I had a Hamer 335 that I thought sounded too bright and brittle compared to others, one time 20 years ago playing in Nashville, the band we were opening fors guitar player (-who is now one of the most well known guitar players in the world) borrowed my Hamer when his 335 and his backup had an issue -he played the whole set with it -and suddenly the Hamer sounded amazing to me.

Last year he borrowed it again -just for old time grins.

Same. I think (?) I could hear differences between one wood and the next, depending on context, but I doubt I'd be able to say, "Oh, that's an alder-body guitar with a maple neck" based on sound only.

I can identify fretboard between maple and rosewood or ebony -but body wood? much harder

Re: Feeling argumentative? WARNING TONEWOOD CONTENT

You guys do realize the men we lionize and hold up as our heroes had no idea what kind of wood their guitars were made of. They just wanted a decent guitar and a loud ****ing amp and the day was done.

Re: Feeling argumentative? WARNING TONEWOOD CONTENT

Its amazing how nerdy we are compared to 99% of our heroes in you think about it.

Re: Feeling argumentative? WARNING TONEWOOD CONTENT

You’ve got a pretty damn good ear then!
There’s a YouTube vid with a blind experiment in fretboard woods. Let me try to find it.
I failed the test miserably! Lol
Here it is.

https://youtu.be/GRuk0vdoeeg

It's not hard if you know what to listen for -theres a little snappy high end sound on the attack on a maple fret board that a Rosewood lacks.

I can usually nail most of the you tube A/B blind tests. Mostly because I know what exactly to listen for that differentiates things. you can't really listen to the whole sound -you have to listen for certain parts of the spectrum for the giveaways.

People can be trained for this -so it's less about how good your ear is.

Re: Feeling argumentative? WARNING TONEWOOD CONTENT

Oh man. Love the title of the thread!!! LOL!!!

Dunno who these dudes are or where they come from but when it comes to electric guitars: I'll put money on the fact that I can hear the difference between Basswood or Alder with Maple and anything else (given the same pickups and amp. settings) (Invaders and Marshalls of course).

To be fair (but I could be WAY off of the mark here): I think it would be HARDER to tell the difference between woods when it comes to ACOUSTIC guitars??? Dunno. Maybe if you're a classical guitarist and purist???

No way, on an acoustic the tone is completely shaped by the wood. You’d have to be deaf to not hear the difference between a D-18 (Spruce/Mahogany) and a D-28 (Spruce/Rosewood). I believe it’s the density of the back/sides that either accentuate the bass or roll it off. That makes it seem like there are more or less mids. Bracing, construction and shape play a large roll as well, obviously, but I guarantee any guitarist here would pass the blind test.

I think the OP is either a banned member alter account or a troll. They haven’t contributed anything except to start an argument.

Nobody can do that......picking out wood.

Not the least, is that wood has a range of density, and hence you can have variability across the same material. Given the 6 or so bits that make up a typical guitar all can either homogenise the tone or make it way different, it possible for 2 of the same to show more difference in theory than 2 different types.

I would expect however that you could listen and pick up if 2 guitars of the same type did sound a bit different to each other......I mean if you can spot any difference that is the key to the argument, it matters not if you could pick the composition.

Re: Feeling argumentative? WARNING TONEWOOD CONTENT

I'm not convinced that body woods of an electric guitar makes enough of a difference to matter audibly. It's certainly below the pickups, bridge, neck size/profile, and electronics.
