Fender Custom Shop '69 equivalents?

Hi,

I love their sound but I would love to have a RW/RP center PU. Are there any alternatives that give that tone?

Re: Fender Custom Shop '69 equivalents?

the duncan custom shop could do one but it wouldnt be cheap. easiest thing to do would be to get a '69 and have the magnets repolarized and flip the hot and ground wires

Re: Fender Custom Shop '69 equivalents?

I think Fralin makes a set, but don't know any details.

I have a set made by the now defunct Chubtone, and it's one of my favorite strat sets.

Try GFS (Guitarfetish) or Illusion Pickups which may both be found on eBay. Here are the links.

"Accurate 42 gauge Formvar plain enamel wire" LOL! nice

ive tried those gfs pups before and i didnt think they sounded much like a fender '69 at all. not a bad pup but sounded more like a fender 57/62 pup which is ok, but nothing to write home about.

Those Illusion pickups look pretty interesting...might have to check em out and supposedly made in USA as well!

Chris Klein also makes a set for about $150, havent tried them out yet.

I currently have SSL-2 (Vintage flat poles) in the Strat now. Came that way when I bought it used in '96. They do sound great for overall Strat sound, but tend to have more midrange that I want. The CS '69's seem to be more scooped. I recently bought a vintage '74 Strat with the staggered pickups that definitely have that scooped sound. So for my regular Strat (that I can mod in any way!), I think the CS '69 will work for me. Or some similar equivalent.

Re: Fender Custom Shop '69 equivalents?

the ssl1 is basically a early 60's strat pup, the ssl2 is the flat pole version of that pup. by the late 60's fender was putting less turns say 7600 vs 8300 they used earlier. also the late 60's used plain enamel wire rather than the formvar used earlier.

Re: Fender Custom Shop '69 equivalents?

The regular CS69`s sets that you can buy from Fender ($200?) are only initialed/overlooked by abby. The CS69`s that she actually winds herself will cost you at least $500-$600!!!

Oh wow! See I didn't know that! Guess I'm not as smart as I thought..:1:

The ones that Abigail Yabarra actually winds herself have her full signature, BUT I don't believe that I've seen these anywhere (even on eBay in some time) and you used to be able to find them.

Re: Fender Custom Shop '69 equivalents?

is everyone sure the 1969 CS PU's don't come with a reverse wound middle? Along the same lines i own a 1966 Custom Shop strat and it has the 3 way switch that if you leave in the middle you get hum canceling... the middle on my 66 is RWRP

makes me wonder if the 69's are the same...
