Floyd rose qusetions

Hey, i am starting a build with a floyd rose tremolo and locking nut. Just got a couple of qustions for guys that have worked with them.

1. Do they replace a normal nut. (Eg. Like a graph tech, or any regular bone nut) or are they incorporated on the neck together.

2. How do they mount to the neck itself?

3. For fret measurements i assume i still measure where the locking nut meets the fretboard?

Re: Floyd rose qusetions

1. No they don't! The slot and dimensions are very different so you basically have to build the neck knowing that you'll put a Floyd nut on it.
2. Typically there are 2 ways: Top mount where you drill 2 holes from the top of the neck and bolt the nut on to it, or through-the-neck mount where you actually drill 2 holes THROUGH the neck from the back, and have the 2 screw go all the way through the neck. Certain ESP guitars use the top mount, most Ibanez do the through-the-neck mount.
3. Yes you do

If this is your first time working with a Floyd you shuold certainly checkout the technical section on the Floyd website as well as go look at some high quality guitars like Charvel Jackson Ibanez that have a Floyd and see how they're doing it. I did a build like that few months ago and it really helped.

Re: Floyd rose qusetions

I watched some you tube videos about installing them and understand alot better now. But I cant seem to find the length of the nut on the floyd rose site. As if you were looking at a birds eye view of the guitar. I got the width of nut but does anyone know the other dimension for those who have them.

And also cant find on the sight if the locking nuts are tapered with the neck or the locking nut is just square. and if so i would assume the width they give on the site would be where the nut meets the fretboard.

Re: Floyd rose qusetions

Wow terrible! I Just checked their website, and seems like they have a new website up and they don't link you to any of the dimension diagrams anymore! Somehow they figured that's not important wtf

Re: Floyd rose qusetions

Im glad its not just me who cant find anything on that site.

Might as well get Gotoh then!

It's way cheaper, just as good in terms of quality, and even has a few great improved designs:

* Locking stud to make sure the studs dont oval your guitar body over time and overall improves tuning consistency
* Smoother saddle edges for your palm
* Inner threaded arm with a separate tension adjusting mechanism for more flexible arm configurations

In addition to that, the Gotoh is also made for 14" fretboard radius, which is much more in-line with modern guitars. Floyd Rose somehow still thinks people are installing Floyds on 10" and 12" radius guitars with narrow 1 5/8" spacing when brands like Jackson and Charvel are running compound 12-16" radius fretboards with 1 11/16"... Of course, you can just shim the saddles to fit whatever radius you want, but if you're building something it's just nice to have a part that's machined to match perfectly. Not sure what fretboard radius you'll be building, but keep that in mind as well. Make sure to order some saddle shims just in case.

You can buy the Gotoh here: http://www.mojotone.com/guitar-parts/tremolo-bridges/Gotoh-Floyd-Rose-Locking-Tremolo-Chrome

Dimensions for the bridge piece here: http://www.mojotone.com/guitar-parts/tremolo-bridges/Gotoh-Floyd-Rose-Locking-Tremolo-Chrome

Nut dimensions here, I'm linking 2 but they have a few more on the site (they even sell several versions of the nut! Like top mount, through-the-neck-mount). Make sure to get the nut that fits your neck width and string spacing and fretboard radius!!!!!!!
