I've gone through phases of British and American tone. I started with British type amps in the 80's. Throughout most of the 90's, I used boutique Fenders....Blues Pearls. Then in the 2000's, I got bit by the British bug again.
And I'm not just talking about gain. The British cleans sit more forward in a mix than Blackface tone. All I've been playing is Bogner, Matchless, and Gibson Goldtone.
Now, I'm the opposite of B Bent. I'm starting to jones for the Blackface sound again, and I'm sure my next amp will be something like a 64 Vibroverb or Tone King Meteor. If you've never heard Tone King amps Greg, you'll see why Knopfler uses them, as soon as you plug in.
