Re: FREE set of Duncan pickups of your choice. On me. Merry Christmas.

RG...this is a really cool thing that you are doing!

My Story:
A few years ago I got back into playing guitar after several years of being away. I was drawn back in because my 10 year old son is now playing and I thought that it would be something fun/worthwhile to do together. I was able to purchase a LP Studio a few years ago, and it has been very suitable for what I have been playing. However, I am now at the point where I am now a lot more concerned about my tone. I know what I want to sound like, but my current guitar just isn't getting me there. I would love to be able to upgrade my pickups to a set of Nickel Covered Whole Lotta Humbuckers. I love the classic Jimmy Page sound and I love to play Rock/Classic Rock. My fingers are crossed that I can win this!!!

My LP Studio (my son's Ibanez is in the background):

Re: FREE set of Duncan pickups of your choice. On me. Merry Christmas.

I present to you: a Gibson 60's tribute LP I should not have been able to afford. Light with an open clean voice and that perfect bitey fret clash that only comes with well-levelled frets.

black_lp-1.jpgblack_lp-2.jpg

Stock P-90's are unusable for me - muddy, rough, fizzy on the top end. I play a lot of worship and other mellow things and need Coldplay/U2/Toad the Wet/Band of Horses sort of mellow chiminess.

I guess I'm a poor down-trodden musician. I've been struggling with chronic illness and unemployment for some time now and it's interfering with my quest for One Good Gigging Guitar™ - I want just one good guitar that I don't have to fight with, whether it be buzzy frets to avoid, worn-out electronics, funky neck profiles, pickups that have only one tiny sweet spot through my rig.

This guitar has been sitting in it's case for too many years. If I can't get it usable I should put on my big-boy pants and sell it so I can buy important things like medicine. The problem is that it's as close as I've been able to get to a proper high-end guitar.

I have a sound/pickup idea that I've wanted to try for a long time. Not sure if this is too expensive but here's what I'd order if I had the money.

In order of want-itude:

A) A new, never-before-seen monstrosity. Aged magnet loaded coils with steel reflector plate. Wound pretty hot for a mini, by hand like a single coil. Reference pickups: original wide-range, firebird, old dynasonics, alnico staples, bar-magnet melody maker pickup. Target sound: thickness, sustain and bell-like "gelled" character of a humbucker without the harsh compressed roughness under distortion. Single coil-like open sparkly smoothness under light overdrive without the loose unfocused top end. Note: requires extensive R&D?

B) Bridge: PG+(my favorite Duncan) with the same embiggening treatment they gave the slash A2P bridge. Neck: seymourized T-top. Like the stamped-logo pickups in the '62-'63 ES-335TD I was too poor to buy in my teens, except with seymour's touch. Note: doesn't exist yet. Both pickups on soapbar baseplate.

C) Set of SM-1 or SM-3... I'd have to talk to someone at Duncan as the sound clips don't help much.

I appreciate you doing this.

Re: FREE set of Duncan pickups of your choice. On me. Merry Christmas.

Rodney,

With men like you in the world, I can believe that the world has hope after all.

I wasn't going to enter this because I've got more guitars than anyone deserves to have. But I was curious and so I began to read the posts. I was really struck by the one by superpete because it was so similar to an experience I had 6 or 7 years ago...my son and I would go into the local music shop and drool over the guitars we wish we had but couldn't afford. I was particularly knocked out by a Gretsch Elliot Easton sig model Pro Jet in Cadillac green and a Fender Jazz bass with AAA flamed maple top in tobacco burst. We lusted after those two unique instruments for months, then one day they were gone. My heart sank. A few weeks later they showed up around my birthday cake...a present from my loving wife.

I still don't want to enter for myself, but I would like to give another entry nomination to superpete. He sounds like he would get much better use out of a new set of pups than I would.

Superpete, hope you win, guy. And give your girlfriend a big hug and kiss for me...what a great gal.

Rodney, thanks again for being such a great guy. A very Merry Christmas to you and your wife.

GuitarDoc and Superpete, that must have been an amazing, and emotional feeling receiving those guitars like that! WOW.....Congrats !

Sell it & use the money to buy a 90s Gibson LP Studio (those WERE good!), an old SG Standard (compromise on looks might be necessary, better a good player with a blemished finish) or a 90s ESP (finer QC - puuurfect frets, great necks, etc. - & not all of em were metal oriented, not by a long shot...look up the Semihollow Eclipse)... or a 70s-early 80s japanese built Ibanez/Greco/Burny/Aria (aim for LP Custom copies, those were reliably hiend, and dont fear the bolton, theyre still up there at least with Trad Pros, maybe even Stds from Gibby)

Any of these will not be axes you have to struggle to like. Also, you dont seem to want metal - while most of the used market DOES...puts you in a win-win situation, the stuff youll love most will have the better deals

...you might even have a hundred bucks or so left from the tribute (sell for 5-6 bills, buy for 4-5)

I only have one electric and I am content at the moment. I just want to say that this is really awesome of you Rodney, and happy holidays!!

Re: FREE set of Duncan pickups of your choice. On me. Merry Christmas.

That is one awesome looking LP! The P-90's scream Live at Leeds. I can't believe you think they are muddy? They are well-revered on the SG forum. If I had the money, I would buy this guitar off of you. It would probably be my new #1.;)

And thanks to Rodney Gene and his generosity, I can feel the love on this forum.;)

Thanks.

Yes, it was incredible, and made me fall in love all over again.

Re: FREE set of Duncan pickups of your choice. On me. Merry Christmas.

Mad props etc. to Rodney Gene. I don't need any pickups, just saying, I salute you.

Re: FREE set of Duncan pickups of your choice. On me. Merry Christmas.

I'll take you up on this offer
I want a dog ear antiquity P-90 for my epiphone les paul junior

Re: FREE set of Duncan pickups of your choice. On me. Merry Christmas.

I must say this is a very very awesome and thoughtful gesture. I would love a set of black winters for a black les paul. I want something to create absolutely annihilating riffs. And at times, to play loud crushing music to occasionally irritate my obnoxious neighbor who keeps falsely blaming me for my dog crapping in her yard and giving me a hard time about it. these pickups should do the ticket. If I am nominated to recieve these pickups from you sir, I will buy you a gift of your choice for your guitar of equal value. That is my way of participating in the kindness you are offering. With you doing this, shows your passion for music and your respect for your fellow musicians. Just let me know what you would like in return and it will be a gift from me to you. I think this is more about the thought and kindness of this act than just getting a free set of pickups. thank you for being a good person and have a very Merry Christmas. Cheers!!

Re: FREE set of Duncan pickups of your choice. On me. Merry Christmas.

I have an esquire telecaster body (Thanks ANiMl btw) that I'm gonna send in to USACG to have them route it for a humbucker in the neck and deluxe-style wiring (and a forearm/tummy cut) when I get the neck for it (which will be maple, 7.5-9.5" compound, probably like 1" and asymmetrical or something).

As for pickups, I'd really like something like a telebro 90 in the bridge, but closer to the Jerry Donahue bridge than the brighter 54/broadcaster/etc style vintage telecaster pickups that use A5 (because of the maple neck and everything). I already have the neck pickup - it's going to be the de-wound A3 SH-55 I posted about a while ago.

RG, I can't tell you how cool you are for doing this. Really, it's tremendous and I think whoever wins is going to be happy as a clam.

Re: FREE set of Duncan pickups of your choice. On me. Merry Christmas.

I'd like to throw my unworthy hat in the ring.... if a UK member actually qualifies.
My beloved Anderson has still not been mated to the ideal single coils.
The bridge Custom Shop JB is perfect and will never be replaced but the mid and neck singles remain elusive.
I was guilty of choosing looks over tone but she's so beautiful I'm still madly in love after 8 years.
Unfortunately my recent health collapse has ended my professional career and the resulting financial loss has ended my gear purchases.
I still own my ultimate guitar so its not the end of the world but I'd love to complete the pickup choice in the guitar.
Mine would be a Custom Antiquity single coil with flat pole pieces.
Nothing too extravagant but the flat radius simply doesn't work with my ultimate production singles.
Either way, congratulations on your offer, many congratulations to the chosen winner and a very Merry Christmas to everyone from Welsh Wales.

Unfortunately I'm recovering from yet more ear surgery so I can't get to my pc ( doing this from my smart phone ) .
However my Anderson is featured in the SuperStrat poll thread.
Sorry I can't put up another pic.

Some strat pups for this would be neat;

or this;

Then I could do something with them.

Re: FREE set of Duncan pickups of your choice. On me. Merry Christmas.

This is an awesome offer. I am blessed with gear and equipment (and you can only play one guitar at a time :1:)

I would like to give my chance to "BachToRock", the 59/Custom Hybrid changed the way I think about tone forever.

Happy Holidays to you all

Re: FREE set of Duncan pickups of your choice. On me. Merry Christmas.

I just jumped in to say, Rodney please take my maximum respect man! You are awesome.

I don't wish to participate as I have already received a pair of lucky holiday cheers pickups by Bones, Will S-T and Evan. It took quite long to restore the old axe but hopefully during the holiday I will be able to finish it. I'll play it for you guys on the comeback show of my band that fell into coma 2 years ago, at 31th of December. For all the good times!

Re: FREE set of Duncan pickups of your choice. On me. Merry Christmas.

Happy Holidays & Merry Christmas Everyone

I would love to try some Seth Lovers in my Standard for the Christmas :D

Re: FREE set of Duncan pickups of your choice. On me. Merry Christmas.

this is my guitar I would add the new ones to

RG4YardFull.jpgRG4Yard.jpg

it has the Chrome Carvin S22's in it and it sounds ok

the Carvins dont split as well as I would like
and I have a creme set of Triple shots for it now

on my other Ibanez I have a JB/Jazz that sound wonderful
and I would love to have another set in this one

but I would like them in double cream
and I cant get a double cream JB/Jazz set

if i get a set chrome covered then the triple shot rings would not fit over the covered tremspaced JB

so I'm back to either a standard spaced covered set or a open coil creme set

the creme would look soooo good with the blue flame
I think they can make a creme P-Rail set
and that would really make the triple shot rings most effective

so Santa Gene,
if my name gets drawn,

I really would like a
creme set of P-Rails
one hot bridge
and one not so hot for the neck

thanks
