Friendly Solo Contest 2

Re: Friendly Solo Contest 2

Thank you.
That was my 2015 LP Special with Fokin Custom p90’s into the Blackstar HT Dual pedal using the emulated output straight into my DAW.

Great melodic solo, how did you record it?

Thanks!
I DL-ed the track and imported it into Audacity. Then used the setup I described above.
I usually record in Cubase but for some reason it kept freezing up on me.

I'm not listening to anyone else's stuff until I can get a track recorded that I'm satisfied with. Been working on it again today.
Maybe by this time next year...
And no, I'm not trying to make it perfect, just good enough for me.

I hear you. That’s kinda what I did. I separated it into 3 sections. Intro, rock part and outro. I found it easier to “chunk” it than to try one continuous track.

Re: Friendly Solo Contest 2

It's teaching me how to look at leads in a different way. I'm used to looking at songs from a rhythm perspective. I'm starting to realize that I don't have to play continuously with the backing track.
As frustrating as learning can be, it beats the alternative.
Although sometimes you need to know when to take a break for a bit.

I am a dumb old man that doesnt know how to record something and upload it. I probably played over that track 50 times, and only once was I happy with it. I guess just record with my phone and upload on YouTube?

If that's what you have, then yes.
I'm doing mine on my 4-track.
1 out of 50 is good.
I'm working on one out of 1000.

I think it's good to be your own worst critic. That track seems so simple, yet its deceptively difficult to sound interesting. Or more likely, I ain't very good. Lol

You can DL audacity for free but you would need an interface to let the instruments “speak” to the program.
A basic 2 channel interface is pretty inexpensive.
A DAW like Audacity, well any DAW has a fairly steep learning curve. It can be frustrating learning how to navigate through the program.

Re: Friendly Solo Contest 2

I need to get a recording system back together here. Have a nice laptop but really don't want to use it and my desktop is not reliable so will need to put something together when I get a stable set up in my music room. Have a M Box but what is a decent free or low cost user friendly PC program now?
Miss the days when I could get a wild hare and noodle with stuff. Have a bunch of crazy late night jam stuff running direct with my old Rockman Voo Doo valve like this from back when I had a ADAT set up but that been a while.
Would be nice to do stuff like this again solo at the house here running my old ADAT and a drum machine + the Rocktron.

I'm not good, or even fair.
I'm stubborn.

Re: Friendly Solo Contest 2

Ok. Got something I dare to upload:

Took six attempts to get it there. That's not an easy track to play over indeed! Great practice.

EDIT: Just listened through other songs. Damn great stuff! Made me think I should have went for wettier sound too. Seems to fit in much better.

What gear were you using on the recording? I kind of like the basic cleanish tone you were getting . . . but yeah, a little 'verb or delay wouldn't have been out of place. :P

Strat Middle SSL-5 to Egnater Rebel 20 with G12H.

I actually had reverb there, but turned it down because it sounded excessive. Only realized later on it wasn't reverb in earlier recording, but the fact I had forgot to dial out monitors when recording causing the effect...

Haven't been recording with this cab before and not really digging tones I was getting. I need to revisit this in sunday if I have time.
