Gaps in the Wiring Diagrams?

From what I've seen, for the most part, most of the diagrams here are for traditional setups and traditional control layouts - LP-style 2H + 4 pots + 3-way; S-S-S + 5-way blade + V-T-T, etc. There's quite a few variants, of course, what with the push-pulls and this and that, but what diagrams do you not see here? I know I've seen quite a few requests over time that there's not a diagram for, though I can never recall them when I actually have time to sit down and try to catalog them.

So post those wiring schemes here, if you remember one that you got help for that wasn't covered (i.e. P-Rails with a 6-way rotary and 3-way Gibson toggle, H-S-S with master this or that), and I'll see if I can put them together in somewhat of a standardized drawing format. Can't promise they'll look as good as SD diagrams, but they should come out better than Paint.

Maybe together we can build a library of every possible (feasible) pickup and control combo.

Re: Gaps in the Wiring Diagrams?

FWIW - A common one that is missing is HSS with 500K vol for the hum and 250k vol for the middle/neck.

Re: Gaps in the Wiring Diagrams?

That's a good one. Scanning through the available diagrams, there are no H-S-S diagrams with 2 volumes and 1 tone at all.

Re: Gaps in the Wiring Diagrams?

How about this one I ended up doing for my H-H-H? Not for the faint-hearted or for those who want control simplicity.... but for those who want LOTS of options it's a winner (at least it has been for me). Although I gotta admit, I've been thinking of removing the varitone and making the center pot a master tone.. but then what to do with the varitone? Maybe a multiple passive distortion or something!

Anyway... here it is:

That's a beauty! Are the mini toggles all DPDT On/On/On or On/Off/On?

:smack: Oops! Sorry! Should have given out that info, huh?

  • The minis are all DPDT On/On/On
The guitar used had been H-S-H, but when I replaced all the pickups, I replaced the single coil with a stacked humbucker. Pickups are:
  • Bridge: SH-4 JB
  • Center: STK-S2 Hot Stack for Strat
  • Neck: SH-2 Jazz
Controls are:
  • 3-way toggle for Bridge/Neck Pickup Selector
  • Neck pot: Master Volume
    * push/pull for Bridge & Neck Cut
    * includes Treble Bleed Mod
  • Center pot: Neck Tone
    * push/pull for Center On
  • Bridge pot: Bridge Tone
    *attached to 3-way Varitone (.005uF, .022uF & .047uF) using DPDT On/On/On mini
    * push/pull for Bridge Phase Reverse
  • Three DPDT On/On/On Minis for Series/Split/Parallel (one for each pickup)
  • Note: the center pickup is not attached to a tone control

For the record, the guitar used (a 1985 Westone Spectrum LX) was not worth the investment I put into it... at least not by any type of resale terms. That being said, it's my favorite guitar and was my first decent quality electric guitar. We have history together, so the investment was worth it to me personally. If anyone is interested in its story, you can find it here.

looks interesting.. sure wish i had a spare guitar i could try that on

It's fun, and pretty easy to understand for having so many switches. I'm not crazy about super switches (or even 5-ways) simply because you end up having to memorize stuff. On this one, each switch has a separate job and you can tell easily by looking at it how it's set at any given time.

Cons: There are lots of combos, but only a few I actually use... kind of like most multi-effect pedals. Also, if you need to change sounds quickly, you may have to throw/pull multiple switches. You're trading speed and simplicity for options with this one.

Re: Gaps in the Wiring Diagrams?

I thought of a ridiculous HH wiring that allows all settings I can theoretically think of, to a total of (edit) 156. Haven't yet made a diagram, maybe I'll do one soon.

Why? I think I might turn my Epiphone into a test guitar to find out my favourite settings for possible future wirings.

Re: Gaps in the Wiring Diagrams?

Recommended wiring using Liberator for HSS or HSH are missing.

Edit: And for SSS too. True single coils and stacked ones.

I haven't seen a Liberator in person, but I'm seeing quite a few diagrams for the Volume control (not sure what else this system covers). They appear to focus more on the Liberator as the main/master/bridge Volume. Can you elaborate on the specifics of the diagrams you feel are missing? As I said, I've never used one, so I don't know what it can and cannot do beyond the solderless thing.

There's probably a reason this one's missing

Re: Gaps in the Wiring Diagrams?

Swyse helped me out with figuring this one out. HSH, 1 vol, 2 tones, push/pull vol pot for coil splits on all 3 pickups. He made modifications to the 3 STK-S4 diagram to accommodate for the 4 conductor bridge and neck humbuckers:

Re: Gaps in the Wiring Diagrams?

I'm looking for something to do with a second push/pull if I add one (when i replace my volume pot) in a strat with 3 single coils. There is not a lot available on the site for 3 single coils and push pulls. I think I may have the second push/pull be a phase reversal for one of the pickups, I just have to decide which one...

Re: Gaps in the Wiring Diagrams?

Snake - I saw that one recently. Definitely on the list of diagrams to catalog.

Kac - I'd say the middle, since that one would be used with either of the outer pickups. However, doing it to the neck and adding a bridge+neck option could yield more interesting results, but also involve another switch. If the volume push/pull is used for B+N already, you're halfway there.
Other options for push/pulls involve Superswitches, where 2 poles of a SS can be wired differently (one standard Strat and one for alternative combos) and the p/p switches between those functions.

Re: Gaps in the Wiring Diagrams?

Going back to the Liberator for a moment, it appears to have enough terminals for 2 4-conductor pickups, and one of those jumps out to a separate Volume control or a switch in the case of single-volume setups.

Off the top of my head, I could see where 2 Liberators would be used in a 2V 1T H-S-H setup, where the Tone was a push/pull for activating one of the hums in any position, and each hum has its own Volume control.

However, I'm sure the recommended wiring is only half of what the Liberator can do.
Perhaps the Liberator's RWGB wires could run out to DPDT switches, and those loop back into the Liberator, for example.
This requires further contemplation on my part.

Re: Gaps in the Wiring Diagrams?

Ok, I see it now: the main terminal block is merely that - a terminal block. It has no direct connection to the pot it's attached to. You have to jump the terminal block to the smaller block for the Liberator's pot to actually do something. The smaller block also appears to accommodate 2 pickups, so it can perform in 2-pickup/single-volume setups.

While this smaller block appears to be hard-wired to a Ground point, you still have to create the connections - one to the system ground and one to the pot casing. That means (in theory) you could wire the Liberator as a Tone control instead of a Volume.

I haven't gone through all the Official diagrams, so I may be stating the redundant.

Re: Gaps in the Wiring Diagrams?

Why not? There's going to be lots of useful settings, like HB1 in series and out of phase with itself, HB2 parallel and OOP with itself, then both connected in series and HB1 OOP with HB2. Who wouldn't want that?

edit: never had rotary switches sadly, does anyone know if a 4-pole rotary will fit into an SG? That's my only concern, the standard 3-way toggle used in LP's already is too deep afaik.

The liberator is meant to be used as a volume control. But the key is how to wire for other configurations other that the default HH. I know color codes would not match but hey, SD already offered pre wired pickguards like the BYOP (Bring your own pickups) so it is doable, it is just a matter to kno how do they recommend wiring for HSS, HSH or SSS (true or stacked)

Edit: Currently I am using the liberator to wire neck and bridge only of HSS or HSH, I do permanently wire a SSL-1 in the middle. I would like to see what SD suggest so all 3 pickps can be used solderless thru the liberator.

Re: Gaps in the Wiring Diagrams?

What about a three full size Humbucker setup on a Strat without adding any other controls... except... for three Triple Shot Mounting Rings around each Humbucker ?

I say full size because they have a three mini humbucker diagram in there...
