GFS Mean 90's or Phat Cats or some other humbucker-sized P90?

Re: GFS Mean 90's or Phat Cats or some other humbucker-sized P90?

- When it comes to Phat Cats, you need to understand that they were designed for the Hamer Newport guitar by Jol Danzig and Seymour Duncan. They were meant to be the perfect pickups for that guitar and not "humbucker-sized P90's" per se

- I'm allergic to Bigsby's

- That's where the confusion comes in: people think Phat Cats are like the other HB-sized single coils. They are not going to get a Gibson P-90 tone from them.

- Have you seen a doctor about that Bigsby allergy? Do you break out in hives?

Re: GFS Mean 90's or Phat Cats or some other humbucker-sized P90?

- I'm new, I don't want to get in the middle of anything, but I didn't ascribe anything unpleasant to that post regarding the decision to use A2's in the Phat Cat.

- If I was to make the change today, I'd do the Mean 90's based on cost.

- I'm waiting on FedEx to drop off a set of Seth Lovers for my Epi Les Paul.

- The arguments have been raging for a few years, and calmer heads usually agree that Phat Cats do not sound like P-90's, nor where they intended to. That leaves them in a strange category by themselves. Doesn't mean they're not good PU's, just that people's expectations don't necessarily match up with reality.

- Mean 90's are very popular here, even with guys who don't mind spending a lot more on PU's. They have a tone much closer to a Gibson P-90. I wish Duncan would come out with one of their own in that category.

- Seth's in an LP: Great choice!

Let's just say it's not pretty. Nowhere near as bad as my gold hardware allergy though :D

They'd sound a lot more like P90's if they got rid of the metal cover.

And Blueman -- is that tarantula made of spalted maple?

Your post #18, was filled with a lot of good information packed in a small 2 paragraph post. I am a A4 nut also, and hearing that about Fralin and his fondness of A4's made me feel a little more exonerated.
Thanks for a really well done, to the point, post.

I talked to Lindy on the phone one day several years ago for over a half hour. Interesting guy. He just loves A4's and thick necks.

A4's have more uses than they get credit for. Without an EQ push in any direction (unlike the other alnico's), they let more of the guitar's natural tone come thru, which may or may not be a good thing depending on the guitar. They're nice in the neck slot for moderating the low end of an A5 and eliminating it's scooped mids, or adding more high-end than an A2 has. I use roughcast A4's for bridge HB's. In P-90's I like an A5/A4 combination in the neck slot, and an A8/A4 in the bridge. Definitely a magnet I keep in my bag of tricks.

Okay. Got my Epi Les Paul PAF project done. Several hundred dollars of upgrades. Now, finally, a nice sounding guitar with a bunch of PAF tunes. Cool.

As for the AS-73?

Well, it doesn't have the range of PAF tone as does the heavily modified ELP. And I can cover every AS-73 tone with the ELP, I just have to fuss with the ELP's dials.

Still, that Ibanez is too good a guitar to klutz around with. I'm keeping it. As is. Like in, 1/8 the cost and 80% the satisfaction. I'll get something else P-90.

In the dark cherry, the upstart, playing way above his breeding, the Ibanez AS-73.
In the honey burst, the flawed-from-the-factory, now (in light of numerous expensive upgrades) hopelessly overpriced, but still King, the Epiphone Les Paul Standard Pro Florentine.

Thanks for your help. I know I started this but I just can't bring myself to mess with the AS.

So how close does the P-Rails come to a "real" P90 sound?
