GIBSON 57's & Burstbuckers

Re: GIBSON 57's & Burstbuckers

I remember really liking the BB1/BB3 combo I played in a distressed 68 Black Beauty RI. I remember them being clear and throaty with a nice vocal lead tone.

I must say though, for my money, nothing beats a Pearly Gates set in a LP.

Also,DiMarzio`s PAF Classics are great for Les Paul`s!!!!! :)

Re: GIBSON 57's & Burstbuckers

Ahhhhh . . .

. . . "that brand !!!"

Just Kidding, mate !!!

I know nothing about Di Marzio's, as we do not get them in Soof Arrfrika !

My cousin went to the UK (vacation) and brought back a set of Evolutions (made famous by a Mr. Via !)
He droped it into his Ibanez RG 121 Prestige (he's into his melodic metal, think Lacuna Coil meets Nightwish)and neither of us were impressed. (he was still not a fast shredder, like Via -WTF ??? you pay sooo much for them, and you still play crappp, wink-wink)

So he took them out, dropped them into his Ibanez MM Barritone and sold it for way more than what it was worth - the guitar, btw !

OK, so the above story has nothing to do with my problem, but that is the ONLY DiMarzio experience that i have !
(...we as SA-guitarist's know almost zero anout them, as we have NO importer for them . . . )

Thanx any ways !!!

Re: GIBSON 57's & Burstbuckers

Again, thanx to all . . .

To, "gripweed" :

That 59' in the bridge & Jazz in the neck sounds like it could be something that i am after ?!!
I'l have to look into that combo more seriously !

Oh, and can any one tell me what the "phase-switshing" produce. Souns wise !
Any guitarists we know that are actually using that type of wireing ?
Would love to know how it sounds !
Also, is it difficult to wire the pu's in the configureration ?

Thanks !

Actually my second suggestion was the PG neck and '59 bridge. I *love* the Jazz, but for what you're looking for the PGn would be better IMHO. My own personal bias is for the '59 in the bridge. It really made my Epi come alive

Pagey used a lot of the phase switching in his guitar, maybe that is part of what you are looking for. The PG split is supposed to be one of the best sounding split pickups.

Re: GIBSON 57's & Burstbuckers

How bright is your guitar? What is the specific tone you have on your mind?

Re: GIBSON 57's & Burstbuckers

Well, Dr. Barlo . . .

. . . here is my story !

I feel that the Neck is too bassy/wooly

...............and.............

the Bridge it too bright.

(i just can't win)

Me and my brother bought our Epi LP's about 2 years apart.

Mine was bought in 02, and his 04.

My Gold Top has open coil pu's and his (Black LP) has the chrome covered ones.
I thought they are the same, except for the covers.

When i AB'ed them, his sounded much more mellow than mine with the open coils. (...although, on a visual point, i do like the "looks" way more, than the chrome ones - FWIW).

Mine also sounds like it is a much hiher out-put pick up.
He gets that nice bluesy tone immedietly, and i can not.

It is also very difficult for me to desribe a sound verbally.
The clossest is probably the "riff-like tones" (as i play rythm - minimal lead) on the Zepp albums until Phisical Graffitti. (first 5 albums, i think ?)

A nother way of thinking, is that classical 60's garage rock style !

Thank you for your help !

EDIT :

FWIW, heres the only pic i have of the two guitars in the same shot :

Re: GIBSON 57's & Burstbuckers

Burstbuckers are supposed to have slightly mismatched coils, like maybe by 0.1k while the 57's are dead-even. I think the BB's are a little brighter, even a bit harsh in the bridge position.

Well, it seems to me like you have a LP Classic and your brother has a LP Standard. Mimicking the gibsons, the Epi Classic will have ceramic ersatz pup of the 496/500 of a Gib Classic, and the Epi Standard will have pale copies of Burstbuckers.

I honestly sympathise with your pain as I was in the very same situation. I couldn't stand the neck pickup (I actually forsook it) and the bridge pup... well I still had to play with something... Until I bought the Gibson... and now changed the pickups.

Re: GIBSON 57's & Burstbuckers

I've decided I really like the Classic 57s. I have them in both my Historics- I recently replaced the JB in the bridge of my Red one with the stock Classic 57 and I couldn't be happier.

Re: GIBSON 57's & Burstbuckers

I think you'd like Duncan alnico 2 pro's. PGs are cool and all (very good pickups, don't get me wrong, I think they are the best non-custom shop PAF replica ever made) but they might be a little bright in your guitar. Duncan alnico 2 p's are very good pickups, basically think of GNR's Appetite for Destruction.

They sure can do Zeppelin in a bright guitar.

They are open coil, so they wouldn't change the looks.

Good luck.

If your guitar is too bright, don't put the PG or '59 in the bridge. Once again the Doc has a great suggestion!

Re: GIBSON 57's & Burstbuckers

Erik told me he posted that thing of mine....I'll just add this:

BB Pros are totally wood dependant. Basically they are like a JB (not in tone, but generally)..all high mids and mids....if your guitar lacks low end or is bright, they will sound shrill and thin. In 2 of my standards they were "passable", in my faded which had a ton of low end, they sounded incredible. But I've played a bunch at shops and they def were too thin/harsh in many of them. They actually are a good way to tell if you've got a decent piece of wood in the guitar.

BB1/2/ are completely different animals. My fave production PAF types.

57 classics are nice for the most part...but can be a little...err..clinical sounding. They sound good overall but excel at nothing, IME/IMO. I think the best thing about them is how tight they are for an A2 pickup. If they just had some more "personality".

Re: GIBSON 57's & Burstbuckers

Now that sounds very cool . . .

I just didn't think that Slash's tone is that close to Page's . . . am i tone deaf ?

I am a BIG GN"R fan (hey, i was the "ever important/very easily influenced" 16 year old teenager when Appetite came out) . . . and that is STILL one of my alltime fav. albums !

I know they both use Gibbo LP's, and Marshall's, but never really thought of them having the same tone, to be honest !

Will the A2 Pro's reduce my bassy/wooly neck ?

AGAIN, THANK YOU TO ALL, & and you too, Dr. BARLO !

Re: GIBSON 57's & Burstbuckers

Don't mention it.

It's not that pagey and slash have the same tone. But afterall on the same amp, with the same person playing, with the same strings, and with the same guitar,... their pickups won't be sounding like night and day. It is just that pagey uses more punchy pickups (hot a5 PAFs) and slash is more into singing kinda PAFs (a2's).

That said, you can get very close with them a2ps to either of those guys. When playing pagey's tunes, just turn up the presence, reduce the gain, and boost the highs. You could also lower the mids a bit.

The biggest difference you'd hear would be in the bass. Pagey's bass is punchy, tight. With them a2p's (depending on your guitar) you'd get close, but there would be some differences. You'd get more spongy (as opposed to punchy) bass. But the amount of it will depend on your guitar.

Don't forget, what matters is not the pickup alone. It is all about matching the right pickup with the guitar you have.

I had 500 dollar boutique pickups (Holmes' a4's) which sounded horrible, much worse than a standard production duncan pickup (a set of PGs). It was not because the pickups were bad, but because the guitar was not well suited for them pickups.

In your situation, therefore, I think the safest starting point is a set of a2ps.

You're never going to get 100% Page or 100% Mountain with those pickups. Given all the information you've provided, it is about as close as you're going to get. I think it is easier to do Slash, Mountain, etc. with the a2 pickups than it is to get Zeppelin from them. I've been saying all along that a2 is probably what you want and don't realize it yet ;)! You'll get a great sound either way and hopefully the person you'll sound most like is yourself!

Re: GIBSON 57's & Burstbuckers

My 57's I replaced with 4-wire Imperial Jason Lollar pickups (so I can do phase reversal/single coil/ etc.) on my 2007 LP Classic Antique Fireburst, and then put the 57's into a maple semi hollow Jay Turser and they scream good noise! Next I may put them into a 1980's Cherry Wine Laguna 335 that kills...but that is another story....
I think the 57's - they have great bite too, and you get all the tones and overdrive you want. BB if Warren Hayes can belt out the blues with his LP's wired up with these - can't be all bad...the proof as they say is in the puddin, but your ears and amp and how you play will also determine how they sound...Johnne in Seattle :13:
