Re: Gibson Explorer vs. Flying V ?

try finding a case/gigbag for a V before you buy one ;)

i love the look of explorers.. Vs are like a metal cliche for me, i love the fact that explorers are unusual...

Re: Gibson Explorer vs. Flying V ?

I think the SG is the 2nd best guitar Gibson makes, but I do think the Explorer sounds much better than the Flying V. See: Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Re: Gibson Explorer vs. Flying V ?

the explorer has the absolute best balance of any guitar ive ever played (gibson that is, the ESP ones are neck-heavy as hell). V's are cool, and might just be my next guitar, but i just love everything about explorers

Re: Gibson Explorer vs. Flying V ?

The V seems to be kinda classy nowdays.. I loved it in the 70's and still do.. Like the Explorer too, but I associate it with Southern Rock for some reason, whereas I associate the V with everyone from Shenker to Blues!
Just my two cents, and coming from someone my age that's probably the reason I think this.. (43) years old! Yikes! hehe..

Your only as old as the girl you feel! Grouch Marx!

Like Speed Demon, a ‘V’ is easy to play sitting down if you hold it like a classical guitar.
If you don’t know how to play a classic guitar, I would highly recommend it. You’ll learn what to do with the rest of your fingers ;)

If stranded on a desert island, a ‘V’ would stand up in the sand better (assuming you didn’t bring a stand). It would also make a more intimidating weapon should you find the island is actually occupied…

Re: Gibson Explorer vs. Flying V ?

it depends on how your body shape is on which guitar your going to get. If your a fattie stay away from the V sence it excentuates the blubber, the Explorer can make a obese comic book dealer look cool.

Re: Gibson Explorer vs. Flying V ?

I will own an Explorer shape someday. A V is cool, but I can't play it "classical" style. I use quotes, because I can play a Les Paul that style, the V just isn't right to me.

Re: Gibson Explorer vs. Flying V ?

Hetfield played V's in his early days with an invader in the bridge and a distortion in the neck.

I'd totaly go for a V over an explorer! Its the shape of 80's rock! Well.. So is the explorer.

Maybe Cuz' Allen Collins and Jeff Carlisle used em' I may have even saw
Ricky Medaloce Slinging one? But my vote goes to the V :D From Albert
King to Kerry King and everyone in between. Jimi Used one,Lonnie Mack,
The Schenker brother's ( remember michael stole his from rudy) I have a
Epi V That I love. I play sitting down. you have to make some adjustments
But it's not to bad. I had a lil' trouble dialing in the tone at 1st. It was very bright? (Mystery wood body w/t maple neck) But I put a APH-2 (neck model) in the Bridge w/t a 250k pot and a PG's (bridge model) in the neck position
and the thing sings??

It's Not the Guitar that makes you look fat...It's the fat that makes you
look fat. :laugh2: :laugh2: (sorry,just had to say that :) )

I made that leap just based off your "80's bands" statement. :)

Re: Gibson Explorer vs. Flying V ?

Hahaha that is true but I still love the Explorer sooooo much, it's just great. I would've gotten one of those if they had a case in stock lol.

Re: Gibson Explorer vs. Flying V ?

Vs just look gay. Explorers on the otherhand look alright, and they're just a huge chunk of wood, which is another plus.

Re: Gibson Explorer vs. Flying V ?

...But the "V" is so cheesy. It looks like something out of an old "Lost in Space" episode.

Explorer :fing2:

Re: Gibson Explorer vs. Flying V ?

I've played both extensively and my #1 guitar is an 90s Explorer with Duncan Custom/Jazz. Anyone who thinks they sound the same is either tone deaf, or simply not experienced with them. Explorers have a very full sound that is extremely thick on the bottom. Almost like a Les Paul, but maybe not so chimey; less finess and more growl. Flying Vs on the other hand are very mid-rangy like an SG. Not nearly as much low-end and more biting highs.

In the end I can't tell you what to buy. I love Explorers, Les Pauls, and SGs, but I've never cared for Vs. To each their own.

Here's my Explorer:

I'm about 90% positive I'm going to buy this tommorrow to go along with it:

What ya think? These V's are pretty rare and hard to come by. It's all mahogany in natural, just like my Explorer.
