Gibson Explorer vs. Flying V ?

Re: Gibson Explorer vs. Flying V ?

i definately prefer the look of the other kinda V pickguard. sure the one in the pic shows more wood and allows for mounting rings, but it just doesnt look right to me

Re: Gibson Explorer vs. Flying V ?

Both the explorer and Vee looks great. I would choose those with the wooden looks. Looks more classic. But owning either one I could decide on the Explorer; looks bigger and with a great shape.

Re: Gibson Explorer vs. Flying V ?

It sucks that choices like this must be made!

I've never played either one, but I prefer the looks of the explorer just a bit more. I would think that the V must have a somewhat thinner tone due to the fact that there just seems to be less wood volume, but I could be totally wrong on that point.

Actually, I think the Firebird is cooler than both of the above, now that is one smoking hot guitar!

Like Speed Demon, a ‘V’ is easy to play sitting down if you hold it like a classical guitar.
If you don’t know how to play a classic guitar, I would highly recommend it. You’ll learn what to do with the rest of your fingers ;)

If stranded on a desert island, a ‘V’ would stand up in the sand better (assuming you didn’t bring a stand). It would also make a more intimidating weapon should you find the island is actually occupied…
but if you were stranded on a desert island alone with your "V" would you call it "Wilson" or "Gibson" :scratchch

Re: Gibson Explorer vs. Flying V ?

If I had to pick between a "good" V and a "good" Explorer, no doubt I'd go w/ the Explorer.

As said before the extra mass and the balance are excellent features. Tonewise, the explorer sounds nicer to me than a V, but not all V's are that midrangey as another poster stated. No doubt guys like Rudy & Michael Schenker had some killer "fat" tone with V's.

Another fave player of mine, Mathias Jabs is the reason I bought an Explorer in the first place. Great player with great tone (he played strats too of course).

I'm *REALLY* loving my Firebird Studio. It's turned into my "go to" axe. I can always pick it up and feels & sounds great. I was gonna sell it, but not now, I'll sell my Les Paul before the Firebird. Tonally, it falls somewhere inbetween an Explorer and a SG, which is a very nice sound, especially through a cranked marshall/marshall type amp.

Re: Gibson Explorer vs. Flying V ?

im not a huge gibson fan anymore, but id go with the explorer, i have a v style guitar, great standing up, little tricky sitting but DEFINATELY not as bad as everyone says, i just balance one tip on my bed and it works great

AMEN Brother V-Spot :newangel:

For the rest of you, try this:

Show your mother a picture of an Explorer and a Flying V. You can even add a Strat and an LP to the collection if you want, then ask her to name them… I bet the one guitar she’ll know is the V.
In fact your Grandmother can probably identify a V.

That’s because V-lust is buried deep in the primitive subcortex of the human brain.
The sight of a V makes a lasting impression on everyone that has seen one.
Women can’t help but find men who play V’s attractive. Sure, there are many fine attributes to an Explorer, but if you want female attention ;) get a V.

And get an Explorer if you want to attract men, and teenage boys. ;)

BTW, not a 'necro thread', it's called a 'classic thread.' Starting a new thread about something that's been discussed in many previous threads doesn't necessarily have any inherent virtue. How many truly different topics are actually covered in the thousands and thousands of threads here?

Re: Gibson Explorer vs. Flying V ?

Don't have any actual Gibbers but I can second the above comments.

Necro thread huh?

LAst time I was at your place, I think there were little herds of V's and Explorer types all grouped to together. Two or three littlew groups of each. Maybe a couple of double cuts....

You are no help to the dude who is trying to pick his SECOND guitar and decide if it should be V or Ex :lmao:

Re: Gibson Explorer vs. Flying V ?

This thread is 8 years old! I love it!

The original poster probably quit playing guitar by now!!!

Explorers Rule!

Explorers Rule!

When you were here there were 3 "Vs," 4 Doublecut Hamers, 1 LP, and 11 "Explorers" out on the stands.

No Hot Rod, Boat, or ex-wives but we got guitars. :headbang: Life IS Good. :naughty:

I Love the dead. ;)

Edited to add: This thread needs more incentive to fuel some G.A.S. :angryfire

Re: Gibson Explorer vs. Flying V ?

I find Explorers to be about the most comfortable guitars I've played. I like Vs too, but they're a bit too close to symmetrical for me to love all that much. The other thing is that to me, a V has to be '50's style to really turn me on. I'm not a big fan of the later, full-guard ones with the stud tailpieces. Explorers, OTOH, look great to me in both the '50's style and the smaller, pointer modern style. I feel like a V would be very cool to have, but it would mostly be a bit of a gimmick in my hands – just a fun, goofy guitar to have some fun with. Explorers, while pointy and "weird," are guitars I can really get behind fully.
