Gibson Explorer vs. Flying V ?

Re: Gibson Explorer vs. Flying V ?

One thing thats extremely important to note, that no one except me has mentioned , is that on the Explorer, the ENTIRE neck hangs way out in space , and I don't like that, so I'm not really into explorers at all even though they look pretty.. like i once thought I was, like the Kelly and the gibson explorer and hamer explorer, I just can't get down with that neck way out in the atmosphere.
The V hangs right close into your body wuth 1/2 of the neck at your body about the same as a Strat ,is perfect, and thats a REAL players guitar IMO, although the explorer is better for sitting down , like for practice and dicking around. I don't want or need a Explorer ( even though I have a peavey Explorer), I just need a just V!

Re: Gibson Explorer vs. Flying V ?

I find Explorers to be about the most comfortable guitars I've played. I like Vs too, but they're a bit too close to symmetrical for me to love all that much. The other thing is that to me, a V has to be '50's style to really turn me on. I'm not a big fan of the later, full-guard ones with the stud tailpieces. Explorers, OTOH, look great to me in both the '50's style and the smaller, pointer modern style. I feel like a V would be very cool to have, but it would mostly be a bit of a gimmick in my hands – just a fun, goofy guitar to have some fun with. Explorers, while pointy and "weird," are guitars I can really get behind fully.

I'm gonna second this on all counts. Especially the comfort level of an Explorer. I own two Explorers and they feel the most natural in my hands over all other shapes. The ergonomics just work.

Re: Gibson Explorer vs. Flying V ?

...Anyone who thinks they sound the same is either tone deaf, or simply not experienced with them. Explorers have a very full sound that is extremely thick on the bottom. Almost like a Les Paul, but maybe not so chimey; less finess and more growl. Flying Vs on the other hand are very mid-rangy like an SG. Not nearly as much low-end and more biting highs.
...

Thank you for saving me the effort of typing this :)

Re: Gibson Explorer vs. Flying V ?

Tone-wise, the best sounding Gibson I've ever played was an Explorer. Unfortunately, that particular one I played had a loud nasty electric buzz going and it was the only one in the shop at the time. I ended up walking away with a Les Paul that day. Don't regret it, but have always wanted to find another Explorer with "that tone" and without the buzz.

Re: Gibson Explorer vs. Flying V ?

I owned both. The V was more inspiring to play and the explorer to look at. I always loved the explorer shape but liked the neck and the sound of the V. I would always strap it on for sit down playing.
