Gibson finally does it right

Re: Gibson finally does it right

As much as I like the thought of them, I'd still want one with a 50's baseball bat style neck. The slim tapers aren't bad and I've owned several with them, but thicker is always better when it comes to those necks.

Re: Gibson finally does it right

It's a trap. We have become so used to their stupidity, that they couldn't do anything dumb enough to impress us. So they made a decent guitar. Now that our expectations are raised, they can return to their usual level of insanity and we'll be all refreshed and of renewed faith, and have a great big ACK! just like always....

Re: Gibson finally does it right

Wow, looks like I am going to have to take a break from gibson bashing. I dig the features, the versatility, and the style. I agree with you guys about the split coils ; all guitars with humbuckers in that price bracket should have it as an options, as it makes your guitar so versatile.

I don't say this often, but good job gibson. If I didn't have a mahogany + maple cap guitar, I would check it out.

Re: Gibson finally does it right

I got one when they first shipped. I have no plans to change anything on it either, which is really unusual for me. I even sold my beloved R7 in favor of keeping this.

^^ Nice hunk of wood; always liked baccy burst on guitars. As for the coil tapping, Yamaha's been there for the last 30 years. I suppose this is what you'd call a modern LP that keeps the classic lines while providing updates under the hood. Definitely one for a player. Yet, by the time these get to Australia they'll be $3-4k or something.

I like the way you think :scratchch. I guess it's a cue for the LP lovers to get theirs before they disappear and Gibson start making an air LP with the robot system that you can hook up to your Guitar Hero console.

I got one when they first shipped, scored it for $1550 out the door. Awesome guitar. I have no plans to change anything on it either, which is really unusual for me. I even sold my beloved R7 in favor of keeping this.

Gimme that in a 25.5" scale, locking tuners, Earvana or bone nut, a 2 way kill-switch for doing Ace Frehley style toggle switching and I'd gladly play a Glibson.

I was gonna point out how Empty Pockets's comment contradicted itself, but I need to ask why you'd add something a Gibson already has, instead.

This is a little known secret - but I'll let you in on it, because you seem like a good guy...

If you turn the neck volume all the way to 0. I don't mean most of the way, or almost zero - I mean really 0. Then when you flip the switch off of the bridge pup - it will make EXACTLY the same sound as Ace frehley's toggle switch antics. I know you are saying to yourself "That's crazy! No way!!!"

Just go for it. Trust me.

Re: Gibson finally does it right

That is really beautiful, TC.

It's great to see Gibson making a LP (that's not a Studio) in that price range.

It is stickered at $2000 though, but for me buying gear is like buying a car - I never pay sticker (especially now that the economy sucks).

Agreed.
That's why I wouldn't go through MF or Guitar Center.

Here in Wisconsin I would go through Dave's guitars or Cream City music.

I went through *********** when I bought my '07 Explorer Pro.
$899 with case out the door.
Online places all wanted $1199 at the time.

TC, is the back of yours satin finished?

In your pictures, it looks more glossy.

And does the Traditional Pro have a 'Classic' truss rod cover?
I didn't notice when I was checking them out.

When they first shipped, they did because they are the Classics and they decided to rename them.. Manager at my local shop said Gib advised them that are supposed to swap the truss cover and refer to them by the new name. Ive seen them with Classic and Traditional on them

Re: Gibson finally does it right

I bought this from Guitar Center, its an exclusive and the only place you can get them (or GC owned companies like MF and Music123). I wouldn't go to GC for gear advice, I usually know more than the sales guy, but if you know how to negotiate GC is a killer place to get some deals. I've gotten a bunch of great deals from GC over the years.

Mine is indeed a satin back. But its a very smooth satin, not porous like the vintage mahogany studios.

For some reason they were showing up with the Classic truss covers at first, not sure why. However, these really are the replacement of the discontinued classic anyway, so I'm fine with it.

man i never knew i could do that thing i've been doing for the last... um... how long have i owned my SG??!:friday:

Re: Gibson finally does it right

If a guitar costs that much, I wouldn't expect to want to change the pickups either. It looks a nice guitar, reminds me of one Steve Clark used in the early years of Def Leppard.

YES!!! Put a covered one in the neck & make the bridge one all white & have it in tobacco burst. I actually want that tobacco burst one BAD... its perfect for me

"Finally got it right".
I suspect I'm not the only thinking that this isn't really acceptable. If you're paying that much for a guitar, it should have been done right the first time, every single time, not years later in 2009.

I don´t know how GIbson´s pricing scheme works, but if they have a MAP (Minimum Advertised Price) setup like most others do, then I would highly recommend editing your post.

Unfortunately, this wouldn´t be the first time that a random post on a forum was legally construed as a MAP violation (because an internet forum is legally a "Printed Media"), ultimately meaning a breach of contract by the dealer and a loss of the dealership.:(

That´s the main reasion that everybody says "Call or email for price" and merely posts the same MAP on their site as everyone else, because having a lower price listed anywhere else that can be traced to your dealership can and often will cost you said dealership... ;)

They HAVE been doing it right, for a REALLY long time. They're just not adding a bunch of "pro" features that a lot of pros don't even find necessary.

I mean the coil taps and the locking tuners are sweet options to have but honestly, a good Les Paul is EXTREMELY easy to come by...because most of them are awesome by design.

But yeah, that MIK Ibanez you're rocking, that's gonna have the build quality and the tone all day huh? :smokin: Now i understand that there's a price difference there...but Ibanez has guitars in this price range too, with lots of features i don't find necessary. Are they doing it WRONG or what?

it sucks how cheap asian labor has made honest American products seem like such a luxury item. 50 years ago an aspiring guitarist would pick one guitar and play it...now we think we all have to have a stable of axes like a **** rock star...i'm guilty of it too but i'm just starting to realize that a room full of cheap instruments is nowhere near as cool as one or two really really sweet ones...
