I'm soooo aggravated and puzzled by this. It's about money. I get it. This just stinks of CEOs in their ivory towers not being in touch with the population that buys their products. I wish they would concentrate instead on making a consistent product.

This really steams me. Gibson could bring price down or make more friends among dealers or could improve their QC, but nope... they wanna stop anyone from competing with them. I guess it's not too surprising, I mean they tried to sue PRS a while back... AND LOST! BURN!
Seriously, I know few people who want a Gibson who say "Nah, I'd rather get a Warmoth instead." Warmoth is a niche market for those who really want to build something Gibson doesn't offer (woods, colors, pickup/hardware options). If they really want to keep folks like us from checking out Warmoth, they should offer better variety. That's what Warmoth is really selling us, options.
P.S. Regarding variety they need to check their marketing with new models. If anyone recalls the "Vampire Blood Moon Explorer" from a year or so ago, who came up with that idea? Explorers excite me sexually and even I got a de-rection from that!

It would be awesome if PRS bought them, that way epiphone guitars and USA model Gibsons would have better QC, and the wood supply would be much better. Not to mention we could get real fretboard woods. (though richlite didn't sound bad at all on the midtown custom

Guys...Gibson owns the rights to those body shapes and if they want to tell Warmoth to stop using them they are well within their rights to do so.
As for Gibson prices are you guys saying they are priced too high based on real information or based on the fact that you want them to be cheaper??
As for the QC I think Gibson is making some of the best guitars they've made in a long time and IMHO the QC at Gibson has been rather good for a while now...everybody turns out a clunker now and then but trust me when I say everybody...

I assume that patent has expired by now - it's generally 20 years for patents though it's probably different in different countries.
Not the same thing as a trademark which can be maintained indefinitely as long as the owner keeps using it.
I'm wondering if Gibson would actually have been successful if this case had gone to court. After all, they eventually lost when they tried suing PRS. Maybe Warmoth just couldn't afford the lawyers fees etc they would need to fight the case.

Well maybe this is a good thing. Ibanez once focused on building Gibson clones but then was forced to make changes. I actually prefer the post-lawsuit era models because they made more improvements in the designs that went far beyond just how the body was cut. The lawsuit-era clones just look like wannabes, but they produced much better designs when they were forced to be different, IMHO. As soon as they stopped trying to replicate, they really began to dominate. Add a couple angles into the body and BOOM - there it is!

Fender doesn't take their ball and run home; leaving everyone sitting there with nothing to play with. Fender licenses all their body, neck, hardware, etc. styles. Everyone wins. Companies like Warmoth just "pay to play".
