gibson les paul custom???

i found this beat up guitar at a pawn shop for about 200 usd. it looks like a les paul and it says custom at the truss rod cover. the frets are really worn down and the guitar does look resuable. the thing is that where it should say gibson at the headstock, well, it doesn't. it's just black as if it was scratched off. it looks like it has had many years of playing time. i can't find a serial number anywhere. what is it? it's cherry burst in color. mahogany neck and body and a plain maple top. rosewood fingerboard and what looks like a cream binding now. the inlays are square for 200 usd, should i risk it? after adding pickups and new controls and a fret job it should be about an extra 500 bucks. what say you?

Re: gibson les paul custom???

gibson customs have ebony boards and flame maple tops, plus the gisbon logo is inlayed and not easily removable also has the diamond MOP on the headstock and multi ply binding all over. do you have any pics? i doubt its a gibson but i could be wrong

it has binding all over and the diamond MOP. i can get pick by this afternoon. do all of them have ebony boards and flamed tops? i compare the wear of the frets of my 6 year old schecter to this guitar and it looks at least 20 years old. but the neck is mahogany and i read that 80s lesters had maple necks.

Re: gibson les paul custom???

how do i know? with no serial number?

look at gibson customs online and see if it looks the same. serial number should be stamped into the back of the headstock. if theres nothing there, not even remnants of it, i'd be weary.

Re: gibson les paul custom???

did gibson always put in serial numbers? because this guitar looks really old. thanks for the heads up, though. i'll post pics by this afternoon.

Re: gibson les paul custom???

im not sure if gibson have always put serial numbers on like that but if it is a really old real gibson, it probably wouldn't be on sale for $200. then again, the guy who put a $200 price tag on it might be stupid

Re: gibson les paul custom???

well, if it has no serial number they won't know the year or era unless they are connoisseurs and although i'm not proud of saying this, ignorance runs great here. they might have just seen an old beat up guitar, which is what i'm hoping for to tell you the truth. i just wanted to make sure with people that i know know better than i.

Re: gibson les paul custom???

looks kinda like this but heavily modded. no neck pickup. replaced by some metal screen. looks kinda cool. lol. no gibson logo. missing knobs. tuners not original. i think it's missing thee toggle switch as well. heavy fret wear and has a llot of dings. looks heavily gigged.

sounds like a cool guitar regardless, might as well go for it. even better if its a real gibson!

Somewhat wrong on those two points.

Customs traditionally are all mahogany bodies except for the '68 reissues and bursts from the 70's-90's and certain other models. Even then, I wouldn't say the majority of them had a flame figuring going on.

The fingerboard binding should be single ply on the fretboard.

It'd be easier if you snapped a pic and posted on here.

Re: gibson les paul custom???

It may not be a Gibson, but if someone played it till it needs a refret, it might be a great guitar. If it totally sucked I doubt it would have been played that much, but then again who knows. If you want it, make him a lower cash offer and see if he bites.

Would you buy a nigh destroyed, ****ty, ratted out, borderline fake Mercedes just because of the star?

As you can see, the headstock and body use a multi laminate binding, and the fingerboard has only the single sheet of binding.
