Gibson R8 Lost Inlay

I realize these are probably plastic even though I would have at least hoped for real mother of pearl in an R8. It's a 2001 model. I've looked everywhere in my shop. No bueno.

Option 1: Wait for it to show up. :)

Option 2: Call Gibson and hope for a replacement.

Option 3: Stewmac. Possibly upgrade them all.

However, I'm in no way a luthier. I hate to start digging out all the inlays to put in a matching set. I'm also thinking a replacement isn't going to match the rest of them. Finally, if I'm patient enough, maybe it'll show up.

Ugh.

Re: Gibson R8 Lost Inlay

Er, standards/goldtops/bursts have NEVER had MOP inlay. The original was Cellulose nitrate - plasticized gun cotton. But along the way it was thought to be a bit dangerous to store, so in the late 60's they changed the plastics to another less flammable variant.

Its only recently that the historics have returned to the flammable inlay type......I think the True Historic line is the only one.

I know stewmac have a MOP version if you want to take your reissue further from original 50's spec.

That damn thing has to be here somewhere. I tore the place apart for two hours. Possible that the housekeepers swept it up and tossed it. But they normally sit small stuff like guitar picks up on my desk. Ticking me off though. Dang it.
