Gibson SALE ALERT: gibson les pauls $500, gibson SGs $500

Re: Gibson SALE ALERT: gibson les pauls $500, gibson SGs $500

Are these midtowns gloss-finished or do they have a "faded" design?

Since they were 1499.99, it would be a gloss finish. Remember, on a Gibson the Nitro finsih is one of the cost /labor intensive parts of the craftsmanship of the guitar. It adds fully 1/3 extra cost to the value of a finished Gibson.
One of the reasons, along with grade of wood, that the Studios are so cheap.Neck binding as alos huge. Binding is labor intensive , and NOT just cosmetic. Theres a margin of playability, for lack of a betetr term, with a neck with binding. I get a kick out of folks saying the Studios and faded are just as good. They aint.

So what exactly does binding add to the play ability?

I prefer necks without binding.

Hey Andrew. The main purpose is to cover the ends of the frets so that they don't rip your fingers when you're flying fast, but it also makes the board a little wider so that you don't fall off on bends, and you can bend a bit farther.
Plus its beuatiful..and adds intrinsic value to the guitar

I'm tempted by the Iced Tea 1960 Traditional and the Heritage Cherry Traditional Plus....I've got em' both in the cart and the wife says "go for it"......Hmmmm......I've got 40+ guitars, a dozen + Les Pauls, don't even know the exact figures! I don't need anymore guitars....I don't need anymore guitars.....I don't need anymore guitars.....I don't nee.......

Damn, I better get all my unbound necks to the luthier so he can bind them, otherwise my fingers will be ripped to shreds.
Although, in saying that, it hasn't happened in 20 years, so...maybe not. :cool2:

Yeah, well..all I can say is I was playing so fast the other day my fingerboard caught fire.. on top of that, if there were no binding on the guitar, I probably would have lost a few fingers..maybe my whole hand.

ya if that was my music genre style, I would buy that black midtown custom and have a heart attack over how awesome it looks and that I paid only $1000! I am having a bad gas week, just bought some bass cabs FOR THE RIG OF DOOM - Ill post pics when I get em' :eyecrazy:

I'm really tempted by those midtown customs. Does anyone have an opinion on them?

Re: Gibson SALE ALERT: gibson les pauls $500, gibson SGs $500

It just makes me sick that we NEVER get any deals like that here in the UK! If we did I'd have both a Les Paul Studio in Gold and an SG in burst or black.

Those are some sick deals- I'd jump on them immediately if they had P90s or full size Hums

+1 except that I would be after the Firebird. (Already got P90s stashed away!) :D

Re: Gibson SALE ALERT: gibson les pauls $500, gibson SGs $500

Can't you just swap P90s in for mini-hums?

I tried an SG 70s Tribute last week and I thought it was awesome. Very even-sounding and musical. And I love the SG necks.

Unless those deals are going to happen in Canada as well, it's actually worthwhile buying one and having it shipped to a border town to go pick it up - even paying NY sales tax AND our 13% taxes, plus gas to drive 45 minutes each way. Insane.

When you cross the border, do you immediately start driving on the right hand side of the road or do you drift over gradually?

Thank you.

Re: Gibson SALE ALERT: gibson les pauls $500, gibson SGs $500

Insane. Boy is Gibson Scrambling to come up with some cash after the 'lection and subsequent stock market plummet.
It's not them. They've already sold the guitars basically. Their dealers are trying to get rid of the models. It's really nothing different than car dealerships or other types of retail.

You obviously have some cheap guitars. Not all guitars without binding have such poorly finished frets. And I assume you don't know how to finish the frets yourself and haven't bothered to take your guitars to a tech.

but it also makes the board a little wider so that you don't fall off on bends, and you can bend a bit farther

No! Fretboards are the same width. Gibson's binding technique actually makes the frets themselves shorter than similar guitars without binding or Epiphone type binding. I prefer to have my frets go the entire width of the board so I can have smoother bends without the strings "clicking" over the fret-binding junction.

Re: Gibson SALE ALERT: gibson les pauls $500, gibson SGs $500

thank you guitardoc. that one about "binding adding width" just didn't make sense. if that was the case, everyone would complain about those big bound fretboards.

"why not just make the regular fretboard bigger?"

"this fretboard goes to 11"
