i like it cuz its original and would make a very memorable show (something neccesary to be recognized and possibly hit big) like i said it looks like a normal bucker esp. from afar where the audience would be so there is a shock/surprise factor there and the fact that since it looks normal you dont neccesarily have to make it glow if you dont want to

imagine someone on stage when he/she opens the set, the arena is pitch black, and then suddenly you see 2 floating pickups! how cool would that be?

Re: Glow In The Dark Humbuckers?

Here's an honest opinion from a long time guitarist who has used Duncan pickups for almost as long..... I wouldn't put these on a Les Paul if you gave them to me. If they were already on a guitar, I would get out a black marker to cover them up. It just seems gimmicky. They actually might be cool for a Halloween gig though.

Maybe on the right guitar, meaning a funky colored super strat, which I don't play. I guess the main thing is that I want my pickups to be heard, not seen.

Re: Glow In The Dark Humbuckers?

id buy em ....that would mean I would have to buy a guitar to put them in...but I like the idea...especially in many different colors.

Re: Glow In The Dark Humbuckers?

regardless if it goes into production (and someone mentioned this before), patent it before Dimarzio hears about it and decides they invented it, along with them inventing pickups, the automobile, the internet, and the mini-skirt.

Oh, and I think its cool, although it wouldn't have a home in any guitars I have right now. It'd be nice to say "my playing is so damn hot my pickups glow" though.

Re: Glow In The Dark Humbuckers?

Would probably also look great in the new Laiho ESPees w/ glow in the dark inlays and stripes.. ;)

Re: Glow In The Dark Humbuckers?

This just in.... Here's what they look like on stage in a Schecter, courtesy of Bryan Wickmann from the Horror Punk band More Than Never.

According to Bryan, "It's hard to see in this pic but rest assured those things were glowing like ghosts with my blacklight pedal board! Kids were screaming that they wanted my guitar and were very taken by the fact that the SD's not only sounded killer but had looks to kill for!."

I don't want this to sound harsh...but IMO, if this an example of the new products/direction Duncan is looking into and not actual USEFUL things like say the "infamous" overwound PAF...this is very disappointing to me as a consumer. Why would you test the market with this and not an overwound PAF?

+1

I haven't read the whole of this thread, but glow in the dark humbuckers are definitely not for me. They look tacky (IMO), and they're not at all in keeping with the image I (as a consumer) have of Seymour Duncan.

Humbuckers that fill the gap between the PAF-alikes and the Customs on the other hand would be a product I would probably leap on.

Just my two Olde Englishe pennies.

Re: Glow In The Dark Humbuckers?

Those things look frickin' sweet. I'd love to put them on my pickers (PG and Invader)

Re: Glow In The Dark Humbuckers?

Lame:

Granted, they might appeal to a handful of players, but I think they'd be more of an embarrassment than anything else. Followed close second, they surely would be a monumental distraction to not only the band, but to the audience as well.

I'm sure people would ask/comment about them but certainly not in a vein which would translate into sales. Rather, it might have a negative impact.

Maybe this idea would have flew during the 60s or to a lesser extent, the 80s.

The fact that this thread keeps drifting from your very simple question IMO, seems to be a huge indicator too.

I like 'em because when they're not glowing they almost look like double creme.:smokin:

I bet after some time the intensity of the "glow" might weaken and then you would have double creams. Maybe they are better than they used to be.(the glow)
I might get some for the novelty sake. I've got a goth epi with glow in the dark skull knobs. That would be a cool bogart session.

Narrow market, but get the patend, market as you go.

Re: Glow In The Dark Humbuckers?

I know everybody is pissed that the new product is a glow-in-the-dark pickup, and not the 27th PAF of varying output in the Duncan line, but ya know what?

I'm glad. We've got enough PAF clones... it's time for something cool! :D

Are you saying that the band's performance (and the audience's enjoyment) would suffer because of glowing pickups?

It's not a new product. It's just an experiment.
Yeah, I see that now that I've read the thread (after posting :) )

If it's not apparent from my above posts, I absolutely love it. Glow-in-the-dark Invaders would become permanent fixtures in my guitars.

(I know, I know, we've already beat this one to death...too much expense in marketing, research, packaging, etc etc.) Can't blame me for tryin'!
I wonder how much time and $$$$ went into brainstorming this. Seems strange there would be market research into an idea that would have been great 20 years ago. Is there more demand for glow in the dark bobbins than an 11K bridge PAF? DIdn't think so.

As much time as it took our mold maker to say, "Would you like to see what your bobbins look like in glow in the dark material?" And for our purchasing guy to say, "Uh, OK." What would that be, maybe 30 seconds?

And as much money as the company has spent on my time posting on this thread trying to keep it on track.

You guys can't NOT hijack this thread, can you? :smack:
