good gear = bad tones

maybe this has been talked about before, but...who has killer gear and a bad tone...I'll go first.

Jimmy Page(very overrated...sounded much better on a Tele)
Slash(I never understood anyone wanting the "Slash" tone)
Early Metallica(It's fizzy/buzzy, and it's not defined)
Alex Lifeson
Geddy Lee(I have never seen so much good gear sound a bad as it does when both Alex and/or Geddy is using it)
Tom Sholtz(I HATE his tone)
Steve Miller(No balls at all)
Receny Santana(It's just a bad tone)
80's Eric Clapton(Elite Strats just don't sound good)

Just to prove that I do like some things here are some good tones
Jimmy Page(Early days)
Later Metallica(Really just Load and reLoad)
early Santana
Clapton(face it...Bluesbreakers, Cream...these are the tones dreams are made of)
ALL Jeff Beck
Buddy Guy
Duane Denison
Billy Gibbons(Tons of different tones, NONE of the bad, he really is the Rev. in my book)
Seymour Duncan(Killer tone and chops to boot...he really should put out a record)

Re: good gear = bad tones

Meh, it's all subjective dude. One man's garbage is another man's treasure....it's in that vein.

Re: good gear = bad tones

I think part of the whole fixation on the slash tone is in his playing, not just his guitar tones. I couldn't imagine Slash with a different sound... it fits him.

One need look no farther than my sig for my thoughts on the matter. :)

Ditto..

Also on that point, IMO i really like Slashs tone, theres just something about it,I also prefer the earlier metallica tone,..

Re: good gear = bad tones

i like tom scholz tone :(

and i dont knwo why so many people hat the load, reload tones either. i like it better than the MoP, RTL, era tones. and justice for all has proabbly the worst tone i've ever heard.

Re: good gear = bad tones

I think it's more the fact that when artists have not-so-good gear, they care more about sounding good. Then when they have all the money to buy whatever gear they want, they'll care less about the tone and just brag about having awesome gear.

Re: good gear = bad tones

same, give me a £200 used guitar (MIM strat :)) and seymour duncans over an 800 guitar with stock pups anyday

and amps? just hold in there for a valve amp and you won't go far wrong for vintage tones (for my styles, anyway)

Re: good gear = bad tones

well considering nothing i own is considered 'botique' or 'top o' the line' and i HAVE my ideal tone, i'll hafta agree

Man.... I don't know why so many people hate the AJFA tone. I don't care if it was recorded DTB. I still think the rhythm and lead tones coming through that Mesa MK IIC+ are some of the greatest I've ever heard. The cleans could be beefed up but I still love that album for its tone.

Re: good gear = bad tones

I've only heard two Pantera albums, but I think Dimebag Darrel's tone on Vulgar Display of Power and Cowboys from Hell is horrible. I never noticed how bad solid state was until I got a tube amp :D

Re: good gear = bad tones

To be perfectly honest, theres not a single amp(besides f*in Ibanez), weither it be SS or tube, that I can honestly say I havent been able to dial in a tone that I didnt mind playing.

People are too damn picky.

Re: good gear = bad tones

As for Metallica...I really think that ALL their records up until Load sucked...mostly because they wouldn't try anything new. As far as Slash goes...I hate his tone, people call it the "New Woman Tone"...bullsh*t, his "tone" stinks, and for the record (this is where I will get hate mail) I think he is one of the most overrated players of the past 20 years! Anyway as a side note...bad gear=great tones

any ideas...

Jimmy Pages Dano comes to mind, ok Dano's aren't bad...just cheep
Jack White, plays total garbage...sounds killer
EVH, come on...Ed's best tones were a $180.00 piece of homemade junk!
Mark Arm, Trashed Hagstroms ands a Silvertone...great tone
Sonic Youth...all of them, play junk, trash, and garbage...and make some the best, coolest, and original tones I've ever heard.
Tom Morrello, homemade guitars, pawn shop guitars, broken guitars, junk stomp boxes, broken stomp boxes...makes us all wonder...How'd he do that?

Re: good gear = bad tones

[ 80's Eric Clapton(Elite Strats just don't sound good)

FYI Clapton didn't play an Elite Strat. He played Blackie until 1986 or 87. This guitar had to be replaced because it could not take another refret. Fender then designed with his input the Eric Clapton Sig. Strat. EC began playing this guitar around 1987 or 88. He initially was using the Twin Amp, but later changed to Soldanos, Marshalls and then to a Fender Tweed twin. He comtinues to play an EC Strat which last year was changed from Lace sensor PUPS to Fender Noiseless PUPs. The guitar known as "Blackie" was actually assembled by Eric... made from 3 1957 Stratocasters, completley stock that were purchased in Nashville while he was touring with Delaney & Bonnie Bramlett. He liked the body of one the neck of another, and the pups of a 3rd. they were all assembled to make "blackie". This guitar was just auctioned off for his Crossroads foundation in Antigua for a huge amount of money$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ :laugh2:
