Graph Tech Floyd Rose String Savers?

Re: Graph Tech Floyd Rose String Savers?

Do the chrome floyds have more of an issue than standard black floyds? Does the chrome plating flake within the saddle's groove and cause breakage?

I can't really see how these would improve tuning stability, unless it's being compared to a saddle that already has an issue.

I've played black floyds forever and never break strings, plus I leave strings on too long and go Vai-crazy with the trem now and then.

Something else to consider is that these inserts appear to raise the string a bit, which might then require you to slightly lower the entire bridge in order to maintain the same action.

OFRs aren't exactly known for breaking strings if you use good brands

Slippage and detachment if your locking saddles are gunked up with god knows what and locking crooked, yeah... but disassembling them and washing out the crud resolves that

PS using black 90s OFR. Haven't used any other Floyded guitars in ages, maybe it's relevant for crap licenseds...

I dunno, I have never had any trouble with strings breaking at the bridge on my floyded guitars. I suppose it might be a problem, but it seems to be an outlier more than the norm. A liscensed floyd may have this problem, but I only have real floyd rose brand ones.

Never used them on a Floyd (don't have one), but I use them on every other guitar I have. Solid stuff.

Re: Graph Tech Floyd Rose String Savers?

Sorry I should've specified when I posted the question. I don't have trouble with string breaks and rarely break a string unless it is really old. My experience with graph tech saddles made my guitar strings resonate and sustain WAY more than I expected. The $500 guitar I put them on feels amazing and plays better than my 3000 dollar Ernie ball John Petrucci signature. I thought about buying some graph tech saddles for a Floyd Rose and wondered if anyone felt they a similar experience. They really brought my guitar to life.

I haven't put them on a Floyd Rose guitar, as I only have one and it's not my main guitar, but I did put them on a Fender modern 2 point trem bridge and really liked the difference. The tone was a bit warmer and fuller and I noticed more sustain as well. I wouldn't be afraid at all to try them on a Floyd bridge.

100 bucks seems kinda brutal

LOL I kinda thought the same thing but took a chance with some saddles for a Tune-o-matic and it BLEW MY MIND.

good investment. The tonal characteristics and playing response I felt was awesome, it felt like a different guitar. I have put them on a Epiphone Les Paul and a G&L Ascari with excellent results.

I've used RMC saddles/preamp/pickup on a Wilkinson bridge before, and it works really well.

9/10 on my Gibson’s I break a string at the saddle. It doesn’t happen often since I’ll gently file the offending saddle but still...the breakage is done.

Is that really a thing with Gibsons?

The only tuneamatic Ive had for a significant while is a 70's Japanese one, possibly Gotoh, but its saddles seem to be factory notched and prefiled (guy I bought it from was no modder or garage tech), and I don't recall ever breaking a string on it... certainly not two in the same place

Then again, it's also been under string tension for 45 years and never deformed or collapsed, either...

It’s not a thing. When a string breaks on me, typically it happens at the saddle. If you think about it, that makes sense. The string has two points of contact. In my case, a bone nut which would be difficult to create a sharp burr on and a steel saddle which is relatively easy to create a sharp burr on.
When I change strings I take my small triangular file and just make one smooth stroke over the saddles with almost zero pressure. Just enough to smooth out any imperfections that may have developed.

I have a graph tech nut on another Gibson and it’s smooth as silk. That’s why I was interested in these saddles.

Sure SOUNDS like a thing... all ive done to my bridge in years is dip it in a cup of isopropanol 90% to dissolve some gunk

String breakage? None that I can remember
