Guitar straps

Can anyone recommend custom strap companies? I wanna get something real nice.

Re: Guitar straps

I like just about any moderately priced leather strap, fairly wide, with a suede-like finish on the back. I don't like cloth or nylon. I've had Levy's, Franklin, Planet Waves, Fender, and others. I'd say my favorite right now is a wide Planet Waves with kind of a butterscotch antique finish.

Re: Guitar straps

My favourite is the Levy's M7GG. In general, I think that if people notice my strap, then I'm wearing the wrong strap.

I like leather because it slides around on clothing yet isn't as slick as nylon. The drawback is that leather sticks to skin if you go shirtless, in which case I use Levy's cotton straps.

Re: Guitar straps

In addition to the above companies, some cool strap companies I have no experience with: Couch, Souldier, Original Fuzz.

Re: Guitar straps

Suede Franklins for me
Brown for the Epi and Gibsons
Black For the Ibbys and Fenders

Black cotton Levy for the new Hummingbird
Tried the nylon it was way too stiff

Re: Guitar straps

Never gave a strap a second thought save cheap nylon. It's just a guitar strap.

Re: Guitar straps

Anybody know if those elastic straps from the 80's are still being made?

Re: Guitar straps

I have tons of straps but I've become a big fan of couch, great people and a solid product. I have four or five of them now.

Re: Guitar straps

Nylon w with sick graphics...

..or faux leather with sick graphics...

...or leather with sick graphics...

Bottom line ..I don't care as long as it's cheap (or cheap-ish) & has sick graphics (skulls/dragons/demons etc...) :laugh2:

Re: Guitar straps

I like the Walker & Williams straps myself. Good quality, lots of colors, styles & designs and not outrageously expensive. Usually quite a few of 'em on eBay. They also make longtail strap extenders, which is helpful because I find nowadays most straps aren't quite long enough. I'm big and don't feel comfortable wearing my guitars too high.

As far as really fancy straps, here's a link to a place that makes them from alligator, crocodile, sharkskin, and python. Some of the hornback ones look awesome, if you're willing to spend that kind of money on a strap. http://alligatorjakes.mybigcommerce.com/guitar-straps/

Re: Guitar straps

Sixty guitars, and a leather strap for each one. I've probably spent more on straps than a lot of guys spent on their guitars.

I don't like buckles or conches, or anything that can scratch the guitar. I don't do the plastic-backed woven straps as the plastic can destroy the finish. I never put the strap in the case touching the finish, even a leather strap. I like the two-piece "ladder back" design, and I need them to go 54" to 56" due to my portly physique. I like them 2.5" to 3.0" wide.

I mostly have Franklin and Levy's, but several others as well: Martin, Music Man, Moody's, Fort Bryan, Washburn, Double Treble, Italia, Eyeland, Dunlop (Harley Davidson) and a custom strap from a local leather worker.

The designer in me tries to pick the "right" strap for the guitar, one that compliments the look of the guitar. I do spend some time in the selection process, and then the strap I choose will stay with that guitar. I've noticed that guys will comment on my guitar but often women will comment about the strap.

I think the most I've spent on a strap was around $80...one of those was a used Moody's Custom Shop Strap, 4" wide, black leather with blue inlaid leather stars.

Best value has to be the Franklin Straps; I've bought most of mine from GC. Good length.

Levy's are beautiful, especially the carving leather straps. The garment leather is super soft. Lots of choices in colors, and available in extra-long lengths.

Moody's tend to run too short for me. Even if I order a long strap. Very expensive, but top quality.

Ditto for Italia. I think they sell on Ebay still. Had them make me a long strap with a longer body, not just a long tail. I have an old upper back injury from a car accident and if the body isn't long enough the loop where the tail fits in can irritate that spot. Four inches longer, and no problem. High quality and a good value.

Many of the straps have deep sentimental value. Still have the Martin strap I bought for my 1972 D-18. Some from trips, like one I bought from Gruhn's Guitars in Nashville. A couple were gifts from a former lover...she passed away a couple of years ago...bittersweet memories.

Eyeland makes some weird, wonderful straps. Mine is plain stitched black leather, and has a weird tail attachment. Perfect for the guitar it's on, though.

I've heard good things about Couch, Long Hollow, El Dorado, et.al. You may have a guy in town that does leatherwork that could make you a totally Custom strap, and probably for not much money.

For me, selecting a strap is part ritual, making the new guitar mine. Very personal, and I take great care in selecting the right strap. I have a few guitars that were close to $3000, so why would I hang them from a $10 nylon strap? It'd be like your beautiful trophy wife wearing a Dior gown on the Red Carpet...with Chuck Taylor sneaks.

A special guitar needs a special strap.

Re: Guitar straps

Dunlop D-38 for about $8 on 15%-off sales. I try to get just about everything for at least 15%-off if I'm buying new.
If I had any seriously heavy guitars I would probably look for something better, but none of mine are that bad.

Re: Guitar straps

Plaited hair braids from octogenarian Lithuanian virgins

Or wide padded leather and suede

Colour must match/compliment clothes, guitar, genre and attitude, Schaller strap locks a must.

For me, this means deciding between black, or some variation on brown that I think will compliment the guitar.

I like the Levy's carving leather straps because of the way they age.

Just sold one of those Levy's Tooled Leather ones because it was thick and stiff as a board and never broke in. Looked cool but not at all comfortable or practical IMHO.

Re: Guitar straps

I have a real nice strap for one of my guitars... don't know who made it... that is black leather and suede. It is so comfortable and is a pleasure to play with. However, I bought it 20 years ago and there is no branding on it, so no idea where I'd get one now.

I hate hate hate cheap nylon straps. They move around too much. I am also pretty short (5'6'') so I need a shorter strap. I also dislike buckles and the bit at the end where there are two holes when I only need one.

So... putting some money into the problem is the way to go I think. Get something real nice to the exact spec I want.

Thanks for the suggestions.
