How about if I blow tradition completely and skip tolex and tweed and just go stained wood with a grill cloth over the speaker enclosure?

That's what im talking about! A 2x12 combo with a moderate tint to the wood and an oxblood grille.....

I like the badge. It's classy.

About the tolex vs. stained wood, it depends on the amp in question IMO. I would personaly prefer the Lightning to have tolex.

Cool and classy badge indeed, very cool!

Maybe it would also be a good idea to put the little shamrock as it shows on your web page, at some corner of the control panel.

Re: Head/Cab or Combo

Think about the demographic your products are being offered too - and what is the competition not offering? If many companies only offer head and cab, perhaps you should opt to focus on combos, etc.

Re: Head/Cab or Combo

the plate is sweet!!!!

as far as head/cab or combo...i'd probably go with a combo...at least at first...especially if you're trying to stay under or around the $1000 buck mark?!

as for tolex or stain...you might have to experiment with that and just go with what you think looks the best!?

Re: Head/Cab or Combo

For the purests, there are some killer birch voidless ply traditional head and 1x12 combo enclosures I can get for a very reasonable price with a matchless look to them. Also, some very nice Tweed stuff being built out of solid pine out there. If that's what someone wants, it's easy enough to make it happen.

But, having something very unique appeals to me in a different way. I ask myself what *I* would want. I'd like the knobs on the front for one thing. I don't play out any at this point, so I'm usually sitting down. (lazy!)

Also, I've owned a 2x12 Badcat that weighed in at close to 100 lbs. No way I'm doing that to anyone. That was just nuts.

As far as competition and target audience, I'm not worried about competition. That's one of the reasons I'm not really going gangbusters after a classic tweed replica. You can get that at multiple places.

But, if I could give you a really nice tweed circuit and then engineer true reverb into the circuit board, not some funky add-on with B+ voltages within hand's reach, and really get the tone.... then put that tone into a unique package of some sort.... now I'm seperating myself a bit. No one will know what you are playing when you show up with one of mine.

As far as the age demographic goes, that's a tough one. Most folks with $1000 to spend on an amp are going to be near 30 or over if I'm guessing correctly, but there are several guys that are a lot younger that seem to have a lot of disposible income as well.

Since I'm not focusing on high gain mega watt stuff, that's going to help focus my demographics a bit.

dude, i'd stick to combos. Put a nice grill and with that finished wood look (no tolex idea you have in the other thread.) you cant go wrong. I'd take a stained wood combo cab over any head/cab config any day.

It also makes the amps 'sleeper' amps so to speak. Nobody expects a wood finished fender clone amp to rip up marshall tones out of a 2x12 combo, which makes it all the better when you see the look on people's faces.

That's exactly what I want.

Re: Head/Cab or Combo

If I was buying an amp from you I'd want the head/cab version. I already have a combo. Of course I'd want a Scott spiced plexi clone with a post PI MV.;) As far as I've seen that one isn't in the works right now. So my post comes to naught.

Re: Head/Cab or Combo

I love combos. A head and a cabinet is a pain for me and it's just one more trip I have to make when lugging around gear. Combos sound great (the preselected speakers usually always match the amp because the designer does his research on what sounds the best), looks great (complete from the start with no problem matching colors between a head and cab) and make setup one step easier so I say "why not?".

Re: Head/Cab or Combo

I'll take a 50 watt 2 channel head, a 2x12 cab and a 2X10 cabinet both with Celestions.

What's that going to cost me from Scott_F's amp shop?

Re: Head/Cab or Combo

Much as I love the sound of a "Plexi" with a couple of 4X12 cabs, the combo is much more practical (saves on hearing loss as well) :laugh2:
