-Mojo Mojo

Re: help me choose an od pedal

I like and see a lot of guys with good tone running the Soul Food, TS9, and the OCD. Can't miss pedals.

Re: help me choose an od pedal

I'd go with SD's own 805 for a 'better than a TS' sound (more gain range and 3 active tone controls)...or try a Forza if you don't want a TS-style pedal messing with the EQ of your guitar.

Re: help me choose an od pedal

What style of music, amp, guitars, etc?

Re: help me choose an od pedal

Can't speak to EHX, never been my thing in dirt.

Have an 80's/90's TS9. TS9 is a standard for a reason.
The Fulltone OCD is a can't miss, but I have never had one, or felt the need. Don't know why I don't love it. I may have Ts9 ear from all those years....
I see a lot of Mojo Mojo's for sale . Never heard one.

Boss SD-1 is not a bad choice either...(or better yet, the highly underrated OD3!)

But as asked, what guitar/amp/fx/music styles. What do you want out of this thing?

Re: help me choose an od pedal

This is mostly for single coils. Tubemeister 18. Using to boost a low gain crunch channel. Blues/classic rock. I think I'm down to
East side drive
Ts9
Soul food.

Will probably get the ts9 and soul food tbh

ERD is a TS808, I really like mine. I prefer it over a TS9 but it's a matter of taste. Also consider the Tubescreamer mini. I was super impressed.

Soul Food is great but it's a totally different thing. It gets a bit harsh at max gain IMHO if you don't switch the diodes but for the first three quarters of the gain knob it's great.

Really liked the Mojo Mojo as a first always on pedal with very light gain. It's very dynamic and responds really well to pick attack etc and the EQ came in handy. IMHO not that great standalone.

We actually A/B'd my TS808 to my friend's East River Drive yesterday. It's VERY close. The East River has a bit less of a mid hump, and feels a touch less gainy/compressed. Reminded me of my old Maxon OD808.

The East River Drive is VERY bang-for-your-buck.

Re: help me choose an od pedal

Ended up grabbing the east river drive. Thanks guys. It'll be a few days before I get it. I'll let you know how I like it when it comes in

Re: help me choose an od pedal

Shoot, East River Drive, Soul Food & Glove would give a killer variety of tones for a good price.

Re: help me choose an od pedal

I've been through more drives than I can shake a stick at. I currently have two on my board and the gas has finally stopped. I run a RYRA Klone and a EQD Palisades. I play everything from P&W to classic/modern rock to country. LP Jr & PRS McCarty into either a Marshall DSL or Revv Dynamis

Hope you like it.
Word out on the street (the internet :D) is that analogman had a hand in helping ehx conceive the east river drive. Essentially its a TS808 clone give or take.
I don't understand why people like the soul food so much? It sounds harsh and that's because they cheaped out on a few critical parts in the circuit. I suppose they did a better job on the east river drive!

Stacking different kind of OD's can be a lot of fun and brings you a diverse tonal palette to work with. Just make sure that the other pedal has a different circuit type.

I think it sounds great and it's cheap.

It only sounds harsh at max gain which is not what most people use it for. For it to work at max gain you swap the diodes for germanium. Not a big deal.

Re: help me choose an od pedal

OCD is a great stand-alone OD, and the Tube Screamer gets my vote for best stacking/boost OD.

Yes I know about the germanium's and their forward voltage drop spec.
I just found the soul food to be harsh at all settings, really not a pleasant pedal to my ears, ymmv of course.

Re: help me choose an od pedal

When I bought my Soul Food, I tried it out with a Squier Strat loaded with Duncan Designed singles into a current-generation Peavey Bandit. It sounded glorious.

Re: help me choose an od pedal

Own an ERD, Soul Food, and the OCD, I really like the ERD for basic bluesy overdrive, not as mid-rangey as my Tubescreamer, I use the Soul Food only for mild overdrive / speaker breakup, and the OCD is like a Swiss Army Knife, it can do just about anything and everything...
