Re: Help with IDing this wood

That's tough. Sen and Swamp Ash can have very similar grains and not every cut has grain that is highly detailed. Here's a Sen veneer that looks a lot like your guitar:

If I HAD to guess, I'd say Swamp Ash. Still, who knows. Might be easier to tell by the make/model of the guitar...

Yeah its a Grover Jackson MIJ so the first guess would be Sen, but those grains are really throwing me of and it doesn't have an alder/sen sort of stiffness to it in its tone either

Interesting. How would birch sound as a tonewood? Never played anything that was birch.

I haven't had the opportunity. My only experience with birch is my speaker cabs, which are all made from Baltic Birch ply. The grain of that wood reminds me of Birch because I've seen several K98 Mauser stocks with that same grain pattern, and they used birch for those rifles quite a bit.

And now that I look at it some more, the grain pattern also reminds me alot of Oak cabinets, so it may be Oak?

To the OP:

It's ASH.

Here are some KNOWN "Grover Jackson" Ash models, the first two of which I'm pretty sure are the same model as yours:

Re: Help with IDing this wood

i have a birch ibanez destroyer. It's my best sounding guitar.

The early Ibanez DT50's were actually specified as "Basswood & Birch" with Maple necks in the advertisements, if I recall. Another cool fact: A blue Ibanez DT50 was actually my first electric guitar! :) What color is yours?

His is blue also. (just read through this myself,,,,,, lol)

Re: Help with IDing this wood

My first reaction was Ash as well but I honestly cannot say whether Japanese OEMs would call Sen (or sth else) Ash similarly to how Agathis has been christened Mahogany at times.
