Re: Help with replacement Nut

As usual, it's how the thing is crafted that matters a billion times more than what it's made of.

Often, a good guitar tech can "perfect" a stock nut. Other times, the stock nut has too much material missing, and can't be spiffed up to be good. That's when a replacement is necessary.

I don't replace until I have examined whether the stock one can be spruced up first.

I don't notice a damned difference with different nut materials – only a difference in quality of how they are shaped and slotted.

Re: Help with replacement Nut

True, there is some variation in density of bone, but not enough to make a difference in tone, not as great as between bone and plastic.

However, as was properly stated, the material is way less important than the craftsmanship involved in cutting the slots. I cut all my own nuts and do it right and have never had a problem of any kind with bone. If there are "better" materials available, it doesn't matter. It doesn't need to be self lubricating, strings don't bind in bone if cut properly. Bone sounds great. Bone is easy to work with. I don't mind the smell, and love to utilize all dead animal parts as much as possible to make their deaths more worthwhile (they're dead anyway whether you use their bones or not. This is the same reason I believe strongly in, and am an organ donor). But...don't kill me just to use my body parts, but if I'm dead anyway then help yourself in order to preserve someone else's life. Same thing with animals...I am totally against trophy killing or killing just for some parts [like ivory], but if it's an animal we kill anyway for food, then let's use everything it has to offer).

Re: Help with replacement Nut

Ewww, I can't stand the smell of bone. But it is super easy to work with, and I've found it works as a nut quite well. I am using TUSQ for replacement nuts now, and it works great.

Re: Help with replacement Nut

Don't use bone. It completely destroys the integrity of the guitar.

It will be a downgrade from what's already in there. So why switch?

Do you ever post anything that is either accurate or at least thought out first using just a little bit of reason?
We all volunteer our time on this forum with the objective of sincerely trying to help others. Posting blatantly false information helps nobody and causes considerable harm to noobes trying to learn or correct problems they might be having, and it wastes a lot of our time trying to correct your misinformation.
Please, I beg that you think a little bit about these goals before posting your opinions. Not that opinions aren't good or wanted...quite the contrary. But if you have a strong opinion about something, instead of posting it as a "fact", please state that it is your opinion. Nobody can object to that or get angry with you for just expressing your opinion, and we won't have to spend time trying to correct your errors. You will benefit by not feeling picked on and feel that you always have to defend yourself. And your opinions will be appreciated as such.

Everybody will be happier.

Re: Help with replacement Nut

Anyone tried NuBone by Guitar Tech (the makers of Tusc)?

It looks like aged bone, and machines like bone - it even smells like bone on the sander. If I could find a bunch of it, I would use it all the time. The new Alvarez guitars I've worked on have NuBone nuts and saddles.... Works great, sounds very nice.

Re: Help with replacement Nut

So, if it looks like bone, sounds like bone, machines like bone, and even smells like bone, but is 3 times the cost, what is it's advantage over bone?

Re: Help with replacement Nut

I heard they were making nuts and bridges out of Mastodon bone recovered from the permafrost in Siberia

Re: Help with replacement Nut

It's extremely obvious that your desire to appear elite and to manipulate people far outweigh any positivity you have for this field. You're the most disgusting personality I've encountered on this forum and I have absolutely no respect for you. What makes you think I would listen to anything you say? Lol!!

I'm guessing improved consistency of the material over bone? Not sure either. If it's manmade and not natural it's likely to be much more even and consistent than bone. I'm guessing ICTGoober meant that it sands or files as bone 'on average' but isn't as porous. dunno. just clutching at straws here.

What makes you think ANYONE listens to anything YOU say??!

Besides, calling other forum members derogatory names, like you just did and have done so many times, is a violation of forum rules. I would expect that you will receive a PM from one of the moderators soon about this. It would be a shame if you eventually get banned from posting on the forum...I'm sure that many of us look forward with great anticipation to be amused by your next post where you again hang yourself with the rope of ignorance.

Re: Help with replacement Nut

I wouldn't expect to be able to communicate effectively with minds as feeble as yours. Apparently I'm the only tech who understands the impact of every part in my guitar. I didn't think that was such a monumental accomplishment.

Then PLEASE don't!!!!!

Yes, I guess you are the ONLY tech in the world who understands anything about guitar. All the rest of us are too "feeble" to even know how to change strings. Not really a monumental task for a narcissist. (However, it MAY be a monumental task for you to admit to who you really are. One of the major traits of narcissism is not being able to recognise/admit it about yourself)

If you're not going to post anything useful, factual, helpful, reasonable, or respectful, please don't waste your time (and ours) posting at all.

Read my post #28.
