Help Worrying About Guitar

Hi Room

I wonder if you can help me, ive just purchased a back glossy Poly Finish guitar....and cant stop worrying about it..

I have OCD and instead of playing the guitar I cant stop checking it for flaws or worrying about tiny marks that are in the finish (not on top but in it, I think that they are called Angel Hairs and its where it has been buffed between coats)

These are only visible if you hold it under a really bright light and look very close at certain angles......

You cant see them from a distance with or without light.....

Can anyone please let me know if these marks are normal and if it is anything to worry about

Also I have purchased the Fender / Meguir Instrument care kit and a Fender Microfiber cloth, is this safe to use?

Sorry last thing how often should I clean / wipe down the guitar

Yeah, it's fairly normal, especially on a black guitar. The black makes any scratches stand out more, but most of the time you can't tell (on any color) unless you have it up close and in the right light.

That Fender/Meguire's kit is just fine, though you could save a little money next time and just get regular Meguire's car polish. It's not too big a deal what you use on a poly finish. That microfiber cloth is the most important thing anyway, IMO.

I always at least wipe down the strings and fretboard after I play because it'll help the strings last a little longer. I don't think it matters much on the rest of it. That poly finish is very resilient, so you could do it as often or as infrequently as you want. If you or someone you let play it is extra sweaty be sure to wipe down the metal parts, too. No need to risk those corroding.

Don't obsess over the tiny scrathces - think of them as a way of "breaking in" your guitar. Wear marks add character...

I think that basically I just want someone to say "Stop Worrying about it, the marks are normal and nothing to worry about and just to play the damn thing"

OK, I'll say it... Stop worrying about it. The marks are normal and nothing to worry about. Just play the damn thing.

No guitar that actually gets played will stay perfect for long (if it even was to begin with). Playing is what it's for.

If you have this problem, you dhould do one of a few things.

1. Pick a spot on the guitar and scratch it yourself (a sacrificial thing) get it over with. then play it.

2. put it in a hermetically sealed case, and don't even look at it.

3. trade it in for a well used guitar and play the piss out of it. Maybe some of the use will rub off on ya.

4. JUST PLAY THE D*MN THING

If the swirl marks in a black guitar are bothering you......... sell yoiur guitar they will never go away. There is no product out there that will make them go away. The become espicially noticeable under florecent lights. I have 3 black guitars they all show these marks. So you can either learn to live with them or sell your guitar and buy a white one. You won't see these marks in a white guitar!

Oh another option is to play the guitar!

Yes, those marks are totally normal. It's all part of playing the guitar. You just have to live with them.

I don't like them, but I don't worry about them either. They're just part of the process. I do worry about dings though...

I have 2 black guitars, and yes, this is completely normal. There's no preventing it, it comes with usage. There's no use worrying about it, there's nothing you can do. They will just continue to accumulate the more you play. So unless to plan to leave that guitar in a case, you'll have to learn to accept the swirls.

BTW - If I'm the one who put fine scratches or swirls on guitar from playing, its called "character". If some one else puts them there - then its a scratch!

Black guitars are made for two things.

1-Being in an show room

2-Being played till you can see wood

So, have you bought an investment or do you want to play the guitar?

You could always wrap it in velvet *inside joke* but what you should be doing is playing the damned thing.

I'm not one to point fingers, I've considered everything to hide a small accident I had on my headstock, from inlays to severe reconstruction. What did I do? Simple, my girlfriend gave me a hemp (?) bracelet for me to put on my headstock. Where did I put it? Easy, the mark is between the A and D tuners so I put it between the E and A tuners.

Consider such things as battle scars and be proud of them, they'll tell the history the instrument has and to some extent yours.

i have a 20 year old black guitar...it has swirl marks and pick marks...no biggie at all...it adds character to it and it has ZERO affect on playability and tone...the most important factors of a guitar...take that thing and plug into your amp...turn it to 11 and just ROCK OUT...SEND THAT PICKING HAND INTO MOTION AND FORGET THE SCRATCHES!

Get urself a really big belt buckle. I hear there is mojo in those things that help ward off guitar nicks & scratches.

Well, i've decided that my next guitar is gonna be a "non-fancy" looking one. I have an Ibanez RD-500 Fretless bass guitar, which has a really nice quilt maple top, with a thin sunburst finish.

I don't even want to play the guitar, since it scratches so easily. IMO, "furniture guitars\basses" looks extremely shabby once they gets "played in".

For that reason, i'd NEVER want a PRS with a 10-top!

I have a bunch of new looking strats with perfect finnishes..... but my favourite is a beat to dung 1988 USA Standard..... Wear marks show you love that guitar.. I like new looking guitars and keep them that way as long as i can but i never really worry about the finnishes

Well, if i got a PRS with a 10-top, it would just be sitting in a class cage in my livingroom and never get played. And paying such money for a decoration, is a bit silly IMO ;)
