High Praise for Fulltone Pedals!!!

Re: High Praise for Fulltone Pedals!!!

I've got 2 Fulltone pedals, the Clyde Deluxe and an early DejaVibe. The Vibe is the model before the Gold ones, it's white and it is absolutely my favorite pedal. Such a watery tone... cuts through no matter what else I have going on at the time. I've always wanted to try the ChloralFlange and the Ultimate Octave... one day.

Re: High Praise for Fulltone Pedals!!!

question on the clyde deluxe....

my clyde has a internal pot to adjust gain. the clyde deluxe apparently has a 3 position toggle. are those essential the same control? can the clyde deluxe setting be approximated using the clyde's internal trimmer, or is it another type of control?

thanks,
randy

Re: High Praise for Fulltone Pedals!!!

I am always trying out different overdrives, and different things are always going on and of my board.

My Custom Shop Fulldrive 2 has somehow stayed on my board since in went on. And I have been through a lot of pedals. It is so useful, toneful and flexible. Just simple, no frills, great sound.

Right now the two main OD's are that and a TIM. Have a Menatone King Of The Britains on order. Psyched to hear it.

Check out the current board (sounds great):

The Clyde Deluxe also has that internal trimpot for gain, but I've left it in it's original position so far. The shaft, Jimi, and whacked settings are way cool, but those are EQ sweep settings. Shaft is best for funky high notes, Jimi is the classic Vox sound, and whacked has a low yooowwwl type vibe. :13:
I thought, like Lew, I'd just keep it in the Jimi setting, but I'm finding that I really like the gutsy character of 'whacked'. The volume and LED should be on EVERY wah pedal, IMO. The regular Fulltone Clyde wah is great, but it would almost be worth it to sell it, and add some money for the Clyde Deluxe.
It's the last wah pedal I'll ever have to buy. I gotta be careful to NOT turn into Kirk Hammet, and over-use it. :laugh2:

Ha ha. Very sharp my brother! :D

I do use a Sparkle Drive. It is still one of my favorite pedals. I just don't have it on my board right now. I am in "two channel pedal" mode right now. My Sparkle Drive is not going anywhere, believe me.

Actually, my board is always a work in progress. I try different things out. My point of posting in this thread was to point out that the Fulldrive 2 has consistently stayed on the board because it is so toneful, well rounded and useful. Actually at one point I owned THREE Fulldrives (I actually offered up two of them for sale on this board - still have a "backup" Custom Shop one).

One of the best sounds actually is the Sparkle Drive pushing a more or less clean-ish Stevie Ray Vaughan tone INTO the Fulldrive 2's first (cleaner) channel. Man, what a tone. Fat, defined, ballsy as hell.

Right now I am evaluating the TIM. Have a Menatone "King Of The Britains" coming tomorrow, curious to check that out. Only a one channel box, but supposed to be THE sh*t as far as a "Marshall in a box" goes.

Mac, what differences in tone have you noticed between the Fulldrives you've had....any? Your white CS Fulldrive II is the coolest one, along with the yellow one.
I've had the 1st run orange (without the compression pull-up) and the blue one. For some reason I thought the orange one was slightly better.

Re: High Praise for Fulltone Pedals!!!

OK, the Fulltone OCD pedal(#21) arrived this morning and it took me all of 30 seconds to fall in love with it. Hey, it IS Valentine's Day! I've only put an hour or so of time on it, but I'm just amazed at how good it sounds. The tone dynamics and touch sensitivity are insane, but in the best way possible. This pedal has lived up to the hype. Or at least it has for me. I'm already thinking about buying another one to take out on gigs. I'd prefer not to ever let this baby leave the safety of my home.

Re: High Praise for Fulltone Pedals!!!

What fulltone pedal would you recommend for someone like me who's never tried one? These days I tend to favor OD rather than distortion. For example, I prefer the Tonebone Classic over the Hot British, and two weeks ago I got the Barber Direct Drive SS that I'm still tweaking, but overall I like it. For me, I find all distortion pedals that I've tried to be too fuzzy on the top end, and I find most OD's that I've tried to be lacking in bass and the mids tend to be too "barkey and honkey" for my liking, but I prefer the smoother top end vs. the fuzzy top end. To put it bluntley I'm one of those guys who's trying to find that "Marshall in a box." I know a stomp box will never sound exactley like a Marshall and I'm not expecting it to. I'm just trying to get the flavor of it meaning, that warm underlying crunch with a clear top end. So far the Barber has gotten me pretty close. So, what Fulltone would you recommend for me to consider?

Re: High Praise for Fulltone Pedals!!!

The Fulldrive II is the definitive Fulltone OD, but from what Schnook and Curly are saying.......that new OCD (Obssessive Compulsive Drive) sounds like a winner.
It should be, it's Mike Fuller's personal overdrive creation. However, the FDII has two footswitches, so you've got medium AND highgain. If you want something like a FDII that works a bit better with humbuckers, buy a Banzai Fireball. It's just like the FDII, but a bit more heavy sounding. www.banzaieffects.com

Re: High Praise for Fulltone Pedals!!!

From what I hear about the OCD pedal, everyone's saying it's the best thing since buttered tits... I'll have to try one out as soon as they show up in my area! I'd love to hear what it sounds like pushing an angry Marshall... :32:

I've tried the Fat Boost, Fulldrive 2, the Wahs, and the '69 fuzz and i all thought they were absolutely superb at what they did. The '69 is the ONLY pedal I've found that can nail Eric Johnson's "1000-lb violin" sound.

I did NOT like the DP-1... too mushy and farty. oh well... guess it must be the black sheep of the bunch.

Re: High Praise for Fulltone Pedals!!!

Just listened to the clips of the OCD on fulltone.com

HOLY COW. IT'S PERFECT!! The pedal of my dreams has been sitting in Mike Fuller's pedalboard this whole time!

This is exactly what iI've been hunting for in a pedal! My BD-2 and OD-3 just lost their jobs!

I'm gonna pick one up as soon as possible and worry about selling my other pedals later.

Mike changes the specs from time to time. I believe the latest 3 mode model (despite the color) are all basically the same. Before that there was the "flat mids" model, the "comp cut" model, the original model, etc.

Having said that, his pedals are all handmade and each of the three Fulldrive 2's I owned all sounded slightly different.

I had three of the latest (3 mode) versions. One standard blue (11/2003, #1600), and two Custom Shop Cream (both early 2004, #379 and #444). The standard blue was the brightest of the three. The two Custom Shops are warmer sounding. One of my students has a Custom Shop Ferarri Red (also 3 mode) and it is warmer than the blue one as well. One of the Creams midrange is voice a bit lower in register than the other one (which has a bit more high end, or more clarity in the high mids).

And yes, the OCD looks killer. Reviews on Music Toyz have been all positive. Too bad I just plunked down the cash for another expensive pedal.....

Re: High Praise for Fulltone Pedals!!!

Mike M,

I seriously think the OCD may be the OD pedal for you. It's the most 'amp-like' pedal I've ever used. Very quite too. I just can't say enough good things about this pedal.
Mr. Fuller did it right this time.

Re: High Praise for Fulltone Pedals!!!

I kinda stumbled across the OCD on Mike's site a couple weeks ago, and was struck by the organic and integral nature of it with an amp. The one thing clips can't convey is how a pedal feels - how responsive and touch sensitive it is. I'll find out in a few days when I get mine.:

fulltoneocd.jpg

The current GP tested a dozen pedals and gave the OCD an Editor's Pick. Something they wrote gave me the impression that the OCD's transparency and dynamics may be similar to the Klon or Maxon 820:

"Designed to replicate the dynamics and harmonic structure of an overdriven tube amp, the OCD uses a unique multi-stage distortion circuit, as opposed to the more common diodes-in-feedback-loop/ diodes-to-ground configurations."

anyway, details to follow ;)

Re: High Praise for Fulltone Pedals!!!

Thanks for the tips, guys. Curly, I'll be waiting to read your impressions of the OCD after you've put it thru the paces. As I mentioned, my complaint so far with OD pedals is a lack of bass, and the mids tend to be too thick. We'll see what you have to say about it.

Re: High Praise for Fulltone Pedals!!!

Let me say now that it(the OCD) is very touch sensitive. Awesome dynamics. Very responsive to volume knob levels as well.
