Home Brew amp pic's

Ok, I finally bought a PreSONUS Tube Preamp for my Sure 57 and made some sound clips of my home brew amp. I just plugged the PReSONUS into my sound card MIC input. Wow so I have a lot to learn about recording. I hope these came through ok for you to hear the sound of the amp. I know my playing is pretty rusty, oh well, not doing it for a living (I'd starve). Here is my website to download the clips. You really need fast cable or they will take a while. Most are around 500k. The smallest ones are Clip1.mp3 and VH.MP3. They are just under 200k.

Here are some pic's of the final head and cab rig. That's a Blues Junior next to it. This is a Hi Octane head that I built from the AX84 site and it's stock except for a parallel octal socket added. It has a KT66 in it right now. It's about 7 watts. The bottom is home made and nothing fancy. If anyone wants to see the inside of the head let me know. I have pic's.

I designed the faceplate and had Rob Silva make it
(Silvatone amps). He does a great job making sure it's right before he burns it. Awesome quality too.

I love amp pics! :)

now all we need is some clips. :)

Hi Joe -

That looks great :smoker: Gotta' be really satisfying to play through an amp you built yourself.

Re: Home Brew amp pic's

Have you christened it as yet? - I bet you are going to be having some fun with that - 7 watts is going to be awesome for getting that thing just kicking into overdrive and having those creamy tones coming out. Lovely job!!

Re: Home Brew amp pic's

Very cool! That looks great Joe. I'll bet that kt66 sounds great when you get it cooking. 7 watts.. hehe I like it.

Of course we want to see the inside :D :)

Re: Home Brew amp pic's

Yeah, I want to see the inside man.

Now you're hooked. What's next? :)

Re: Home Brew amp pic's

cool man. thats really cool making something that you can play...

how does it sound?

Re: Home Brew amp pic's

Love it! Can't wait to hear some clips! Definitely wanna see the inside!
Really, really good work!

Re: Home Brew amp pic's

Thanks dudes. I actually did post clips months ago but I chose a cheap peamp for my Sure SM57 and it really did not capture the true tone. Made it nice and grungy though. So I will go get a better preamp and post clips later.

This amp I showed you is very much a JCM800 spin off. I'll post pic's of the inside, they are on my work pc so I'll have to get them Monday.

The sound is awesome. The gain is very warm and crunchy with the KT66. Good low end thump with the enclosed 1x12. It's the same size as the Mesa Recto 1x12 so it sounds pretty huge. It's a high gain amp, doesn't sound that great clean. And that's ok because I play with higher gain (covers up my lousy chops..hehe).

Re: Home Brew amp pic's

Are you going to leave it as a chassis amp, or are you going to find or build a headshell? It would be fun to build a headshell that doesn't resemble any other.

Well that's phase three. I finally got the faceplate and now I really need to make a head cab for it. I'm not sure what I would do. I was thinking just black tolex and keep it small/simple. Not sure.

Hey Joe,

Nice amp, man! I really like that slick faceplate. Aren't those AX84 builds fun? I think most of them end up sounding pretty good, too. Plus, as I'm sure you've experienced, telling people that you built your own amp is a fun way to show off :)

Nice, let's get some clips! What kind of speaker is that?

I'll get working on the clips. I just need to go out and buy a new mic preamp.

The speaker is a Reverend All tone 1250. It's a little bright but when I use it with my Weber Blue Dog in parallel, they compliment each other pretty well. Kind of like the V30/G12H30. I use my Blues Junior combo as a speaker cab with a Y cable. I have a impedance selector so I can change it to whatever speaker impedance I need.

Very cool, it looks like you did a really clean job. If it sounds half as good as it looks you might have a sexy thang on your hands. 7 watts eh?? Is that enough oomph to keep up with a band? Or is this amp mainly designed for bedroom shreddn, and recording?

Re: Home Brew amp pic's

you get the stuff out of a kit, or just get the parts list off ax84, also the guy that did the chasis, he have a website?
