how different straps change my tone.

I have a cheap black nylon strap for my bass. I want a bit more thump and articulation.

Want strap do you recommend?

When I play guitar I’m ok. But with my Stingray 5 bass I have to use them with one of those padded gel thingies.

i like a warm rich tone that the padded, wide, leather strap provides. if you are playing metal or something that needs more edge, i can see why the nylon strap with less body would suit you

What I've always been told is the conventional wisdom for metal is although most people go for black nylon straps, you want a nice heavy leather strap (still black) to provide some solid bass but with chrome studs to really bring back that high end bite.

my first strap, which i still have, is a simple black leather one. it sounds AMAZING! it currently lives on my esquire so when i show up to the gig with a one pup guitar, everyone in envious of my tone

I've gotten away from the bite of nylon as I've gotten older. Maybe my ears changed but the sizzle just makes it sound thin, and I wind up compensating with heavier and heavier boots. I have to echo the love for a black leather strap. I've installed the same one on several guitars and I can confirm it works great with every tonewood.

I live in the land of black nylon

It's all about the black nylon ones. That preference must be because of how I was sort of punk when I started. The wide leather ones thoroughly disgust me.

then you should know kurt got his best tone with that white strap

You know nothing about Nirvana's catalog. Check the opening clean tone with a hot rails in a strat. Epic tone.

The super d in the jag isn't too shabby tho.
