How do you set up your action?

The action on my Strat is on the low side but it gets some buzz , it`s very comfortable to play. It`s a little higher on my Tele with virtually no buzz. I`m gonna try and get used to it and eventually raise up the action on the Strat.

Re: How do you set up your action?

I had a LP copy with low action and it had some minor buzz but some fret work took care of it. Had a SG standard with an in between action (not to low but not to high) and I thought it was great. I have a strat with high action and will lower it ASAP. Bottom line I prefer low action if it buzzes I may raise it a little bit or will check which fret buzzes and work on that fret.

Re: How do you set up your action?

low as possible.... my RG is really low with some buzz but the buzz doesn't come through the amp. It needs a crowning/leveling.

Re: How do you set up your action?

I don't like my strings resting on the frets. I like the action high enough to get good clean tone, good sustain, and clear of the frets for long bends.

Re: How do you set up your action?

I'm probably a little less than halfway from low to medium.

It's definitely higher now that I use 11-54 and tune down a whole step, than when I used 9-42 in standard.

Re: How do you set up your action?

Mine is 5/64" on the 6th string at the 12th fret and 3/64" on the 1st string at the 12th fret. Plays like a dream and no fret buzz. :smoker:

Re: How do you set up your action?

Another vote for medium action. I'll live with the strings a little higher, if it offers me more clearance/sustain/ no buzz.

Re: How do you set up your action?

Medium. That way I can dig in. Right about now, higher temperatures are making for slightly higher than usual actions on my guitars. I must do some adjusting...

Re: How do you set up your action?

as low as can be without any buzz, which is just above the frets. I rarely bend strings, but when I do, its the scalloped frets that make it easy to 'dig in' (ug).

Re: How do you set up your action?

I'm not sure if I have high action or low action.
This is how I set up my guitar, so you can be the judge:
(I play SGs, BTW)

I raise the pickup as high as it can go, raise the bridge so, when i palm mute, the strings wont touch the pickup.
I'm not sure if that's high or medium; It's just how I set it up.

Re: How do you set up your action?

I play medium height with .52 - .10 strings.
I work hard to shred, compared to a mate of mine who has it so low, he cant play opens and uses .42's - .9's .
He's a little girl. I play a man's guitar.

Id say il like medium, no buzzing but room to let your fingers "dig in" to the chords and notes, i feel it lets the strings vibrate more through the body giving more volume.

I start with buying her a drink usually......................

Re: How do you set up your action?

med-low.

I like to fight a littlebit. For me, it ensures better definition and clarity: if I just finger a sloppy note it won't even come to life so I have to beat out the sh#t of the axe that causes a rather intensive sound and better control over dynamics. As a negative effect, harder setup means I can't play as fast as Malmsteen. Well, I was never able to play that or half or quarter that fast, so it is not a big loss for me ;)
