Re: How long do Elixir strings usually last?

Re: How long do Elixir strings usually last?

I tried Elixirs a couple years ago but didn't like them. The felt too slippery and made string bends very difficult. I haven't tried them again since, even though I think I have a couple more packs in my supply closet.

Are they polyweb?

Re: How long do Elixir strings usually last?

My hands sweat so much that I HAVE to use coated strings!(Well on my acoustic I do, I've been using GHS Boomers on my electrics and spraying some Finger Ease spray on them and it makes them last Much longer. But I will be switching to Elixirs on my electrics soon too.) I like Elixirs the best, they just seem to last longer and sound better than other brands in my opinion. I tried the Fender dura-tone coated strings on my Taylor recently but I don't think they sound all that great so I'm going back to Elixirs.

Re: How long do Elixir strings usually last?

I was recommended elixirs when I resumed playing (used d'addario previously). Maybe I've just got used to the way they feel but I've not found bending harder than normal at all - mind you I had to teach myself to play again almost from scratch.

Re: How long do Elixir strings usually last?

Other than the slippery feel, Elixirs are exactly the same for me to play than other brands. Perhaps a bit stiffer, but nothing big.

Re: How long do Elixir strings usually last?

I do not think there is an average time for any strings -- too many factors I guess. I have good luck with Elixir and bad luck with D'Addario (in some cases less than a month on D'Addario). I liked Elixir (have lasted a long time with constant playing). I have settled on Martin SP4100 on my acoustics. Elixir mostly on my two jazz guitars. (I do not pound in strings but I am no sissy either) When they break they just break (for no reason) .. just twang -- gone.

Re: How long do Elixir strings usually last?

So what about those cleartones?

I've never used coated strings, ever, so I don't have any idea which to try.

I usually use D'Add 12-54 (EXL145), so string gauge is also an issue, nothing is really close.

crap, we seem to love heavy gauges here.

Re: How long do Elixir strings usually last?

I like the slick feel of the polywebs (no finger noise) but I think they do sound a lil different. Not as bright, maybe?

Re: How long do Elixir strings usually last?

It took me a while to get back about this...sorry. The ones I have are nanoweb.

So, which are better...nanoweb or polyweb?

Hey, don't worry. I spoke to someone from Elixir about 2 days back. Based on his description, the Nanowebs are more like normal roundwound guitar strings while the Polywebs are the same but are coated slightly heavier. This results in a "warmer" sound.

noooope.

Re: How long do Elixir strings usually last?

I had a set of Nanowebs on my Ovation for a good year before I replaced them. They still sounded newer after a year than GHS strings after 2 hours.

Truth be told, I have Martin strings on my Ovation now (just in the interest of trying something different), but the Nanowebs sounded pretty darn good and lasted forever. Some folks don't like them, but I've never felt that they really played any different than any other string even with the different construction.

Re: How long do Elixir strings usually last?

I was looking at the nanoweb strings, double the cost of my hybrid slinkys, but I go through those 1 pack every couple of months. I just love that real acoustic, bright sound from new strings, so I change mine out pretty often.

Re: How long do Elixir strings usually last?

I've used them before and they last a very long time. Really they can last as long as you want them to it seems. I would use them if they made them in 8s.

About 10 minutes...

...before I cut them off in disgust.

Serio? You can't dig the 9's?
