How many of you play 1 of a kind guitars.

Re: How many of you play 1 of a kind guitars.

Argh Zerb...those are trés cool!
DirtyCraig...no that is just Dann's tolex covered 5150's...his cabs was also tolex covered, he used them for the 90-92 Giant tour...he had an insane sound.....and he played so awesomely great...we had the concert of our lives, Huff burning away is a humbling experience...what a player, and one hell of a nice guy too, we met them after the concert, one of my old buddies played in the warmup band.

Re: How many of you play 1 of a kind guitars.

are we talking modified 1 of a kind or factory 1 of a kind? i have both types...all i play are modified/custom guitars i don't want to look and sound like everyone else...that's just lame...anyway here are just a few of mine...

1 of a kind 2002 factory prototype Gibson Les Paul (with added duncans)...

below are some of my modified/custom/1 of a kind...

2002 deluxe powerhouse strat i gutted the electronics since i had no need for a midboost, i just wanted a yellow/maple strat(this is an old pic of it) it now has 3 hotrails, graphtech saddles and a graphite nut along with the diamond plate guard and black knobs seen...it will soon be getting another pickguard and electronics makeover...

guitar2.jpg

my frst hot rod tele...hotrails and vintage tele neck pickup, mirror guard, graphite nut, custom piston knobs (not shown, old pic) and "Mr. Horsepower" hehe..

guitar3.jpg

my new pride and joy...(before and almost after pics below)...started life as a nice color yet bland looking HS USA made tele then i started my work...it now has a hotrails in the bridge and sm-1 vintage mini hum in the neck with a custom cut matte black pickguard, custom piston knobs and switch tip, graphite nut and locking tuners (not shown) and it's at my luthier Cris Mirabella's right now having custom inlay work done...i can't wait to get this back it's gonna be killer!!!

before...

before inlay work...almost done...

guitar11c.jpg

i'll post a new update with the new inlay work if anyone wants me to in a new thread when she gets home!!

that's just a few of them but, almost all my guitars are modified/custom in some way technically making them all 1 of a kind. but the true factory 1 of a kind is the LP.

Re: How many of you play 1 of a kind guitars.

LesStrat is unique...even if he did start out as a Squier...

Re: How many of you play 1 of a kind guitars.

The Bastardcaster is probably unique enough to be considered a "one of a kind" instrument, even though it started out life as a MIM Tele. Pretty much everything on it has been replaced or modified. Come to think of it, that pretty much includes a lot of my collection.

I have a mahogany neck-thru maple sided dark transparent green strat shaped H-S-H guitar that was made by a friend of mine. Gets a few comments when we're out together.

He is a monster player, that's for sure. I had no idea he used 5150s back then. Interesting.

Re: How many of you play 1 of a kind guitars.

thanks Craig!! that guitar is about to get a makeover though...time for a pickup change to H/H i'm sick of that damn middle pickup getting in my way lol....i'm still trying to decide on a guard for it though i may stick with diamond plate or do something real wild. as for the sticker it's just kinda my thing...a bunch of my guitars have old school hot rod style stickers on them b/c i'm a motorhead/guitarist and the two worlds mesh well IMO. plus if i get sick of the look a sticker comes off 1-2-3 and leaves no marks on poly. vs paint which your stuck with for the life of the guitar unless you get it repainted. as for the edited photo...she just looks naked to me now hehehe.

remind why we need to leave the 80s again...

The words "self-respect" "dignity" and "evolution" spring precipitously to mind....

I enjoyed the 80's when they were the 80's. If a single decade was the pinnacle of fun for me I might as well just call it quits on everything.

Every day things just get cooler and better...

Maybe not the pinnacle of fun, just the pinnacle of great guitar playing in every genre. I haven't heard much evolution on the instrument since then thats for sure. :)

Re: How many of you play 1 of a kind guitars.

My guitars are distinctive if not one of a kind;
Mcnaught Phoenix with diamond quilt top in pea****,
Anderson Hollow Cobra with 3 mini-humbuckers(12 pickup positions) and heavily quilted top in honeyburst,
Gibson Les Paul Elegant (Custom Shop) semi-hollow with quilt top in Firemist and ebony board,
PRS Custom 22 in turquoise with matching headstock and back and 10 top with abalone birds.

Re: How many of you play 1 of a kind guitars.

my B.C Rich Custom Stealth is definitely one of a kind since the woods are really exotic and esspecially the inlays are something of my own design.

I guess if you consider shredding to be great guitar playing then sure, I can see that.

But considering it's a learned skill that a chimp can be taught I never did.

I know alot of cats that once the 80's were over didn't much like the way they played.

And the phrase "evolution" wasn't as much as a player but as a person and songwriter and musician. Miles Davis could play a million notes a minute but rarely did. He evolved as a player and as a musician. He left behind a legacy of music that will takes listeners a lifetime to even get their ears around.

I don't see alot of folks moving in that direction. I see alot of folks whose growth as players are stunted because they refuse to evolve and change.

....which is sad.

Re: How many of you play 1 of a kind guitars.

love those piston knobs!!

i have a one of a kind 1959 guild thinline archtop and i have guitars that ive built, ive built and sold a few others similar but mine is a little different than the rest.

as to evolution, as soon as you close your ears youve lost it. listen to everything, you can learn from any and everyone

Re: How many of you play 1 of a kind guitars.

It may look retarded, but I'm proud of the work I did on my G&L. Completely rewired, Wagner Custom Rewinds SR neck and middle and Genesis Sounds Mr. Browney in the bridge. One volume, one tone and a blend control. Took the cover off the tone knob because it got in the way and I very rarely (if ever) use it. Nothing, but Switchcraft and CTS electronics on this thing and I grounded everything at one point. I drilled the holes for the humbucker to sink into, I took a chisel and a hammer to the body to make room for the singles and the humbucker all myself. It wasn't easy and the most professional, but it worked.

I bought it used full of dings, scratches, few chunks out of the fretboard and finish checking, but it has mojo and I love it! It's rare to see G&L Skyhawks around, especially with a natural mahogany body (the key to arguably their best model, the S-500) and the stock pickups were probably the best stock I've ever heard, but the pickups I chose really make this guitar sing.

Re: How many of you play 1 of a kind guitars.

My Hamer is a prototype and the only one of it's kind. It's the prototype for the Sunburst Archtop, made of all mahogany. They ultimately went with the maple cap for production.

There's a pic of it in the "show your guitars" thread
