how much wattage do you *need*?

ok.. let me rephraise.. why are there 100W amps, if nobody, ever, anywhere, doesnt need more than 30W ???

explain that to me.
but you want to know why? because a 30Watter cant take you where a 100W can. if you're talking pure volume, 1W is enough to produce enough dB to burst your ear drums and you know how many people play through 1W amps 'just for the volume' .. it's NEVER just COS of the volume!!!! that is just a side factor
no one ever said that, the said "unless your playing stadiums" which no one on this forum is than you really don't "need"/take advantage of that much.

The DRRI, which is 22 watts has been dubbed the official 'club' amp, so its obviously not BS, of course that DRRI won't be suitable for some of you 80's hair metal guys, but the majority of people don't play that (no offense of course)

The same reason there are sports cars that'll go 190 mph.
ah, but doesnt that peticular sports car have around 350 horse power under the hood, which allows it to go from 0 to 60 in 5 seconds flat? and that it'll continue to accelerate after a certain speed?
if that's your view on it, we all could be driving pinto's
This is a serious question to everybody who says 100 watts is the minimum: Do you run your amp wide open all the time, or a majority of the time?
who says you need to run it on full all the time? or even most of the time??
it's not only the fact that you can do it, it's the sound it produces and other 'side effects' (if i can put it crudely) of the higher wattage which is unobtainable with amps of lower watts

Re: how much wattage do you *need*?

Another good argument is the Vox AC30. Last time I checked, it wasn't 100 watts, nor does it have 4 twelves, but lots of people seem pretty happy gigging with them.... even in stadiums.

Because dudes, especially younger dudes, have always been under the impression that "bigger is better". They picture themselves up onstage (posing like they do at home before the mirror) with a stack of Marshalls behind them blowing thier bell bottems in the sonic breeze.

There's so much fantasy and posturing that's part of this whole rock n roll thing. Of course any woman who's been around will tell you that "it's not the meat, it's the (e)motion!" :laugh2:
That sound you hear over your tinnitus is the sound of a bunch of guys unzipping to prove that theirs is bigger than yours. :saeek:

Re: how much wattage do you *need*?

guys like Rid and Lew now pretty damn well what they're talking about, so theres no use to really try to proove them wrong...

Re: how much wattage do you *need*?

Man.. I haven't seen this many users viewing one thread since Lee was about..

..until they break!

There was a reason why Brian May had so many :laugh2:

Hmm.. I got beaten to that one I think :smack:

Ok, that doesn't make any sense. I wasn't talking about any particular car, and what the hell does 0-60 in five seconds have to do with anything?

Again, I allude to the sports car analogy. If you're not hauling ass most of the time, wouldn't it be silly to get a car who's specialty is speeds of 100+?

and what can you do with that 22 watts? and what club are we talking about? i guess the majority of you never were at a big gig from what i gather here.. do you KNOW what 1000 people at a club are capable to do?

on another note... a 22W 1X12 wont deliver the bass response, move the proper amount of air or put through the crushing mids you NEED at a metal/rock concert. this is not your local blues club. we're talking ROCK here.

you just dont get it do you?

no, it wouldnt it be silly. what do you do when you have to do it? is it not better to have a reserve? and it's not the loudness i'm talking about.
i'm talking about headroom, dynamics and the response of the amp

Re: how much wattage do you *need*?

Has anyone here ever heard Meshuggah live? They're absolutely devastating with two POD Pros going straight to the board, with no speaker cabinets.

ah, there we go

and dont those have most of their amps modeled after 100W amp heads?
it's the SOUND they produce not the volume, you understand what i ment earlier??

o, then excuse me, i was wrong. Who plays stadiums consistently here?

again I said that the DRRI was not good for metal thrashing stuff. Its not at specific clubs its just the most widely used amp for regular, average gigging musicians. I wasn't aware we were talking about specifically the kind of music you play, most of the regular gigs that people go to are rock oriented, classic rock covers, stuff that people can sing and dance to.

Re: how much wattage do you *need*?

wait.....Davey, do you have a 100 watter? doesnt appear you do

Since I don't get it, educate me. Why do many 100 watt amps have the capability of cutting the power down to 25, 50, 75, or however many watts. Why did EVH use a Variac on his 100 watt Marshall? Why do people often remove tubes to run amps at lower power? Is it because they possibly don't really start sounding good unless the power tubes are really getting hot?

If you feel better having reserve, cool. However, to my ears, tube amps don't really start sounding good until they're cranked up pretty high. I still think it makes more sense to get something that is appropriately powered.

TO played a couple of bigger venues and is going to play at the whats the name of the festival again .. well.. it's in early june

well, the thread aint titled what amp does an aeverage gigging musician need.. DirtyCraig (i think that's his handle) regulary plays gigs and tours the states and he's using a 100W splawn quick rod and a full stack .. well, at least a half stack

I wasn't aware we were talking about specifically the kind of music you play, most of the regular gigs that people go to are rock oriented, classic rock covers, stuff that people can sing and dance to.
well, i'm talking big venues and the superstition that everybody needs no more than 30W people here keep spreading. and noone seems to care to explain why bands like maiden, priest hell.. any other band that's playing larger (more than 1000 people) venues use at LEAST half stacks when there's 'always' the PA

it is relevant because you are backing an idea of 100 watt amps.....when you dont own one and dont play out with one.......i am not being negative or combative, i am just simply pointing this out
