How much would you pay for this Gibson Les Paul?

Hi guys,

As some of you know, I usually look at the classifieds for interesting deals. This time a found a 2012 Gibson Les Paul 50's tribute for 520CHF (let's say 1CHF = 1USD). Locally it sold new for 770-900CHF with a bag.

If it's all original, then it should have 490R/498T pickups, which some claim to be EQ unbalanced, but I've played them before I didn't find them bad in other guitars. My only two concerns are that the back is scratched (see pictures), which is only aesthetical and since it's in the back it's virtually invisible; and that the fretboard is made of baked maple, can someone confirm this? I saw it on the Gibson site, so most likely it is like that (http://www.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/Les-Paul/Gibson-USA/Les-Paul-Studio-50s-Tribute-Humbucker.aspx)

The ad says the following:
"Gorgeous Gibson Les Paul Studio 50s Tribute. Fully functional. Pots and switches work perfectly. Was recently re-adjusted, new strings mounted, fingerboard oiled. Serial number 122121542, year of construction 2012, Made in the USA. Cash, must be picked up, no shipping, no guarantee, can be played. Usual traces of use (see photos)"

I asked about the final price and he said 500bucks, no less. Then I asked if the had a bag, documents, TR key, etc. And he said that he has nothing else with the guitar because he bought used in 2016; then he lowered the price to 480bucks.

I was thinking of offering 400CHF and take it up to max 450CHF with some negotiation. Not long ago I bought a 2016 LP Studio Faded with a custom paint job, bag, documents and even a free set of strings and a gibson care pack for 500CHF https://forum.seymourduncan.com/showthread.php?324919-NGD-%96-My-first-Gibson-Les-Paul!&p=4161746#post4161746. I know I probably got lucky on that one, but I also bought a 2010 SG for 400CHF https://forum.seymourduncan.com/showthread.php?326504-NGD-%96-Gibson-SG-WOW. So 480CHF seems a bit steep for what I'm actually getting.

What do you think?

Cheers,
Walter

My 2013 70's Tribute is not fancy and it's not flawless but it plays, feels and sounds great. I got it new in 2015 for just under $600. Go check it out and if it feels and sounds good I think your price range is reasonable as long as you are ok with the thin finish and the bald spot on the back.

I was thinking the same, if it plays and sounds goo, then it's ok. My LP is in mint conditions and it stays in the case most of the time, while my SG is a little bit rough and I play it all the time.

No more than $750 USD.

Studios are all over.

Now that I have a closer look, the fretboard looks too dark and uniform, without any grain, so I might have been painted over. What do you think?

I don't see a problem with the fretboard, at least from the photos. There's some grain there. The photo is dark. Need to see it in person. I haven't heard of a Gibson Studio fretboard being painted over before. Sounds like more work/cost than it's worth to even attempt.

Yeah, I thought maybe the owner had painted it... Anyway, I have to see it in person and play it to decide.

Well, I’m only interested because it seems like a good deal. I already own one and would prefer an SG instead...

You can get a nice SG Standard for $800 to $1200. I got this 74' Standard for $850. If you'd rather have an SG save your money. Some Studios are okay but alot are an acquired taste.

I'd start at $450 and if necessary haggle out at $550 if it really hooked me.

He already lowered it to 480... I was gonna start at 400 and maybe go up to 450.

Yeah, the one I own really got me and I’m happy with it. I’ve tried others that were so-so. My SG special is currently my favorite. And since his LP is damaged it may be harder to sell if I end up regretting it...

Play it and decide before you go through the trouble of negotiating for something you may not want. 2012 is the year of the baked maple fretboard. Some hate it, while I personally like it. However, my 2012 '70s Tribute LP has horrendous fretwork though. The frets are nearly squared off on the top and they extent beyond the fretboard, catching your hand as you move up the neck. All of my 2015 Gibsons (another hated year for entirely different reasons) play WAY better than the 2012. I like the sound of the 2012, but the fretwork definitely needs to be addressed. The guitar you're looking at may vary, but you won't know until you play it.

If it plays well and you are OK with known flaws, then your price seems reasonable.

Why buy a guitar when its not what you want right now? Buy the SG IMO. Its a tribute, not even a real studio. Its a good deal but.... Is it what you want?

This is true, I've seen so used SG Standards for 850-1050CHF in mint condition, with all accessories and hard-case. The thing is that I'm so happy with my SG special, that buying a SG Std may be only a cosmetic upgrade... Anyway, I may pass on this LP and wait for a deal that really makes me want to buy it.

Re: How much would you pay for this Gibson Les Paul?

I just bought a Schecter I barely wanted. Now there's a guitar I really want and will pass it up because I got a good deal. Good luck to you Walt

You mean taht you bought the Schecter because it was a good deal, and now you have to let the guitar that you really want pass? In that case, I'll think about it well before I make a decision. Thanks!
