i took the reverb unit out of jcm2000 a while back. i have heard you can wire the 12ax7 to work as an extra gain stage or something along the lines. anyone heard of this?

Re: how to add an extra gain stage ?!?!?!?!?!?!

it would probably involve finding an amp that has that extra tube, checking out its schematic to see what components are used and where and continuing on from there. you'd need to drill an additional hole for the tube socket or invent your own bracket, and safely "insert" the components into the preamp circuit. then there are the safety concerns of not getting shocked (could be deadly) since capacitors can hold their charge long after the amp is off. and once it's done, it might not sound good, or like the amp you're trying to mimic. the gain might not be pleasant, but farty. or it could be noisy as hell for various reasons.

or....torres engineering (do google) has kits for that sort of thing too, which might be a better option, but once again, maybe not an ideal sort of sound.

is the reverb tube driven in those amps?

Re: how to add an extra gain stage ?!?!?!?!?!?!

You can use the reverb circuit for additional drive---it's necessary to pad it down with a resistor in series, maybe a cap to bleed off some high end and oscillations. There's a lot of gain available here---too much, really.

Kasha Amplifiers http://www.kashaamplifiers.com is what your looking for. They make the Quikmod. They own the patent on it, which is why Soldano had to stop making the HotMod. Yes you just pull the first preamp tube and plug in the Quikmod cable end that resembles a tubesockets pins. This in essence gives you an additional channel where you can now dial in the gain and post gain. About a month ago, I did some clips on a Epi Valve Jr that I posted here for reference.

Here's that thread: https://forum.seymourduncan.com/showthread.php?p=1175978

that is KILLER!

That is is! Also a lot of people don't know is that the first version of that was all over tons of hit records in the late 80's early 90's. Producer Keith Olsen made most of those hit big Rock records with the Quikmod and his stock Marshall 2x12 combo (JCM800 I believe). I didn't want to mod it and made everyone use it for recording.

Re: how to add an extra gain stage ?!?!?!?!?!?!

Wow, did anybody (except ES350) read the original post? He wasn't asking for new products or to add new tubes, he asked if anyone could help him re-wire his amp to make use of existing components.

I'm not sure if the reverb is tube driven in those or not, I'd have to find the schematics. But, if you don't know what you are doing, I would strongly recommend having a tech do any mods.

Re: how to add an extra gain stage ?!?!?!?!?!?!

I read it and that is specifically why I answered with this for 2 main reasons. It's an alternative solution. One it will get him what he wants, and two he won't have to mod or physicially change the amp possibly causing it to lose value. Additionally with the Quikmod you can use the intended Mod with other amps in the same manner. So essentially for the price of modding one amp, you get the same mod with all your amps. It's a decent financial option as well as a tonal upgrade.

Re: how to add an extra gain stage ?!?!?!?!?!?!

How much does the thing cost? I could not find anyone with a proce for it.

Re: how to add an extra gain stage ?!?!?!?!?!?!

I checked the price at one of the stores that will eventually carry it. $499 is the going rate from what I understand and that doesn't look like it will change. Pricey - somewhat, but it does mod your amp without actually modifying your amp.

What was the soldano hot-mod going for back in the day?

Re: how to add an extra gain stage ?!?!?!?!?!?!

One quick question for Institute of Noise - Which tube slot would this get plugged into on a Plexi? It wouldn't be the phase inverter, so would it be V1 or V2?

Re: how to add an extra gain stage ?!?!?!?!?!?!

There's one on E-bay right now for $200.00. Look under musical instruments and Soldano.:smokin:

Re: how to add an extra gain stage ?!?!?!?!?!?!

It goes into the first preamp slot on the left furthest from the power tubes I believe.

Way back in the day both the HotMod and Quikmod were a bit cheaper, but again that was over 15 years ago. The $499 price is retail from what I know. Basically I bet you'd spend close to that for some mods that will do the same thing from a reputable amp guy.
Email Kasha directly from their website. I'm sure they can direct you to who has one, or maybe direct from them.

Re: how to add an extra gain stage ?!?!?!?!?!?!

Thanks Danglin! You Da Man!!!!!! I wanted some extra oomph outta the Edana's front end. I might get one for the Studio 15 too.

Re: how to add an extra gain stage ?!?!?!?!?!?!

those clips were sweet man! Im no planning on doing this myself, i dont trust myself:(

I knew what he meant, using the reverb tude socket for an extra stage. Personally I would find a simple pug in mod my first attempt at what he's looking for. Anythinig else would be drastic and much more expensive. If you don't like the HotMod, resell it on Ebay. If an amp is modded try getting that money back out of it if you're unhappy!

Re: how to add an extra gain stage ?!?!?!?!?!?!

Ummm...the reverb circuit IS a gain stage. Just jumper it with a in-line resistor (go look up the values) and use the reverb for a big boost. No mods necessary...total cost about 10 cents.

Using the preamp tube socket wouldn't be expensive to hook up, if you know what you are doing.

My point was nobody actually acknowledged his question and didn't present their suggestions, which had nothing to do with his question, as alternatives but rather as answers, does that make sense? If I ask someone about say, the horsepower of a Ford F150, I don't want to hear about the acceleration of a Porsche Carrera.

Or, maybe I'm just totally off base... If so, forgive me.
