HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

I like the rolled down tone... just like EVH... it gets a nice single coil quality to it. It might be too bright if you are are using a cap across the volume lugs?

i am not using any caps and when i back off the volume to 3 or so it gets a great stratty clean tone!:naughty:

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

what amp do you use with it?

Any of them. The Crate 60w is the most "brown Marshall" tone, the Ampeg SVT is super clean but I don't use it much and the Fender Mustang does all kinds of things. I use my Crate for testing since it is essentially a Marshall 1987 on the lead channel and a 60's-ish Fender on the cleans. The A2 was totally VH1-Diver Down... perfect average of all 5 records, but I just thought the cleans were wimpy for my taste. The A8 growls like VH1 and Fair Warning on 10, but rolls down to an almost full-bodied Strat tone.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Right. Even worn out it sounds kick ass! I can't wait to pimp it out, get a Tung-Sol for V1, the new EL34's put in, a set of Weber Blue Pups and new caps. It'll crank @$$!!!

hell yeah! I played one stock and loved it some time back.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Some folks claim the transformers are dodgy, but they are modeled after old paper-bobbin types and are no less reliable than old Marshall ones. This thing's been kickin' it for more than a decade and the trannies are great!

I'm thinking a JB/Custom/UOA5 hybrid might be pretty killer. The resistance of the coils is much closer, to there's be less hum and the harmonics would be smokin'.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

I purchased a 59(screw)/Custom(slug) Hybrid from forum member kjrocks, last week. It arrived in the mail today.

I'll install it as soon as the SD triple shot ring that I ordered off of Amazon shows up. Will report back then.

Hey, you got my new pickup's sibling.

I have the other half of that hybrid in the bridge position of my Supersonic with an A5 in it.

I think you're gonna really like it. :friday:

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

A while back I owned the white CC before it became those two hybrids , man that pup made the rounds here! LOL
glad to see it became a hybrid.

No way, that's awesome. That pickup's got some miles on it now, not to mention notes and different musical styles.

I love how gear can accumulate history like that. It's one of the reasons I really like buying used stuff.

Thanks for selling it to Garrett, dude! :friday:

Did you swap the mag already Matt? I know that one had an A2 went I put it together.

Did I get that from you? I was thinking I grabbed it off someone on HC or TGP.

Yeah, man. I asked for that option when I bought it because the guitar I put it in has the bridge humbucker slanted like a Strat bridge pickup, so I wanted the Custom screw coil under the low E. I'd used Custom Custom's and '59s with A2s before and I was pretty certain that something like that would work in this guitar but the more I played it, the more I really valued the trebley, biting cut that it has and I knew that A5 was the way to go to get more of that. I also knew that with an A5 it would be easier to match it up with the '59n I had to go in the neck. I think it was a good call. I may try it out with an A2 someday out of curiosity but I have a feeling that this pup'll probably be a keeper just the way it is. It's a really good match for my Supersonic and, while I'll probably change out the '59 in the neck within a month or two, I have no intentions of touching this one in the foreseeable future.

No slight against you or your craftsmanship, man. It's a great pup and I'm loving the hell out of it. :friday:

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

So is anyone gonna put up some clips?! It would be cool to hear a comparison of the Custom, 59, Hybrid done separately...

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

I have plans to post some clips at some point. I recorded a little composition of mine with a cc/c5/cuo5/c4 then hybridified it with a '59 that I acquired from Kam. I've recorded it all again with the A2 mag, but I need to get around to trying the other mags yet. Since making the hybrid I also cracked open an old pup from my Epi to find a double thick ceramic magnet, so I'll try that in the hybrid too, but it was too late to use in the pure custom :( I didn't think to try it with the '59 either. Ho hum.

FWIW, my little ditty is all recorded with the guitar DI'd into my Motu 8pre, into Logic Pro and Guitar Rig 4. There is a bit of chorusey clean and overdriven rhythm with a more distorted lead noodle as I thought that putting the pup into a somewhat real-world usage scenario might be more useful than just plain clips. I just need to get around to doing the rest of the mag swaps and recordings.

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

bachtorock, have you ever tried a custom/pearly hybrid? I like the 59/custom hybrid in my les pauls, I like 'm a lot, but I think that the pearly might give it a bit more dirtyness, rudeness to it. the 59/custom hybrid can sound a bit too kind, timid...

Re: HOW TO: Make a 59/Custom Hybrid

Indeed... a PG coil will add it's mojo to the mix. I am tempted to Hybrid up a Custom/Brobucker.
This morning, I swapped an A4 59/Custom Hybrid for a Brobucker in an old 80's Maple Kramer Pacer Imperial Body/Maple Warmoth Neck. The Hybrid is the early EVH tone!
I think the A4 nailed it tonally... might be my new favorite magnet!
