How well do new Marshalls do the old Marshall thing?

Re: How well do new Marshalls do the old Marshall thing?

Did someone say, "old Marshall"? :naughty:

Old Marshalls (or old Marshall-type circuits) simply roar.

And hey, if you want to crank it but it's too loud, keep all that glorious tone (that you would lose with an attenuator) and tame the beast by slaving.

Here's proof! :D

Pro Tip:
Someone mentioned them - I do not recommend Metro Amps. It took them 3 times to get a correctly-punched (with terminals) PTP board to me when I was replacing the original PCB in my Marshall. Half-assed effort. :33:

Re: How well do new Marshalls do the old Marshall thing?

Interesting to revisit this somewhat zombyish thread. While hanging out in Waterworld over the weekend, I joined MarshallForum.com. Most of those guys love the DSL40C, and say its clean channel in crunch mode nails the JCM-era tones. I think it might might be what I'm looking for, though I'll probably use it as a single-channel amp, ignoring the high gain channel and the digital reverb.
I recently picked up a used DSL40C, and I'd have to agree. I rarely switch to the overdrive channel anymore because the crunch just sounds so good when you crank the volume and really open it up. Just like an old Marshall.

Re: How well do new Marshalls do the old Marshall thing?

Rich, I got a bug to build an amp and I'm thinking 18W w/Greenback. Am I way off base in thinking that this would give a pretty Marshally vibe at non ear splitting volumes? (Not looking to replicate a Plexi exactly or a Bluesbreaker exactly, just that general vibe with a treble booster and Fuzz Face) Would you do the build again?

My build was somewhat constrained by the donor chassis, so it is what it is. If I were to do it again, I'd probably build a TMB version of the18 Watter, or a 6V6 Plexi. Check out Avatar's demo, I think their 18 Watters are TMBs with EL84s. 6V6 optional, IIRC.
