Anybody here know of a good pickup set for playing classic thrash metal that doesn't completely destroy your cleans?

Re: Humbucker recommendations

distortion/59n

+1

the gibson 500T is another good pickup (that is the gibson counterpart of the duncan distortion). But it's difficult to pair with. the 496R is not as good as the 500T

Re: Humbucker recommendations

The newer generation of SD metal pickups have the reputation of being very versatile (for metal orientated pickups) and to put out some decent cleans too. I'm talking about the Nazgul, Pegasus, Sentient and the Black Winter pickups. Unfortunately I haven't tried any of those myself yet, but I would check out some sound samples of those pickups if I were you.
This could be handy to select a bridge pickup:

I paired a LiquiFire with a 500T and it worked out very well.

The 500T sounds excellent in parallel, giving a very good clean tone, as does the LiquiFire, though the LiquiFire's series clean tone is also good. The 500T and LiquiFire together also make an excellent clean tone (each in full-humbucking mode as well as inner coils).

+1 on Pegasus.

I definitely don't recommend the Distortion if you want nice cleans in the bridge position.

Re: Humbucker recommendations

After looking over the responses, I think I've decided on getting a Nazgul for the bridge and a Black Winter for the neck. Thanks people :yourock:

Re: Humbucker recommendations

Hands down, to ME the JB/Jazz set. Not too expensive, and for many a reason the greatest sellin set ever. Love mine at least. Raunchy, tons of nastiness, but in a good way IMHO. Wanna shred that JB will scream!

Re: Humbucker recommendations

Wanted to mention, I put my JB set into the same type of guitar. That guitar is literally the best sounding guitar i have. Easily. So many harmonics off the JB, and when I get on the Jazz neck, so sweet and liquid. Best money hands down in this hobby I ever spent. Easily

I want to hear some clips to get an idea about what makes a JB sound good for playing clean.

Perhaps the operative here is set?

I think the JB does a few things *really* well, but clean isn't one of them.

Re: Humbucker recommendations

I ran a JB in one of my guitars for 20 years. I could solo with it all day. I never liked the rhythm tone in that guitar, either dirty or clean. I much prefer the Custom for that, though I combine it with a T-top in the middle position for cleans and they are beautiful.

Re: Humbucker recommendations

The Custom is a better choice for cleans and it can still do the thrash thing really well.
